A convenient protocol for stereodivergent hydrogenation of alkynes to E- and Z-alkenes R1CH=CHR2 [R1 = Ph, 4-ClC6H4, 4-BrC6H4, etc.; R2 = Et, 4-EtC6H4, 4-H2NC6H4, etc.; stereo = E, Z] by using nickel catalysts was developed. Simple Ni(NO3)2·6H2O as a catalyst precursor formed active nanoparticles, which were effective for the semihydrogenation of several alkynes with high selectivity for the Z-alkene (Z/>99:1). Upon addition of specific multidentate ligands (triphos, tetraphos), the resulting mol. catalysts were highly selective for the E-alkene products (E/Z>99:1). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Z-alkene-selective catalyst was heterogeneous whereas the E-alkene-selective catalyst was homogeneous. In the latter case, the alkyne was first hydrogenated to a Z-alkene, which was subsequently isomerized to the E-alkene. This proposal was supported by d. functional theory calculations

In exploiting topol. defects of liquid crystals as the targeting sites for trapping colloidal objects, previous work has relied on topog. features with uniform anchoring to create defects, achieving limited d. and spacing of particles. We report a generalizable strategy to create topol. defects on chem. patterned surfaces to assemble particles in precisely defined locations with a tunable interparticle distance at nanoscale dimensions. Informed by exptl. observations and numerical simulations that indicate that liquid crystals, confined between a homeotropic-anchoring surface and a surface with lithog. defined planar-anchoring stripes in a homeotropic-anchoring background, display splay-bend deformation, we successfully create pairs of defects and subsequently trap particles with controlled spacing by designing patterns of intersecting stripes aligned at 45° with homeotropic-anchoring gaps at the intersections. Application of elec. fields allows for dynamic control of trapped particles. The tunability, responsiveness, and adaptability of this platform provide the opportunities for assembly of colloidal structures toward functional materials.

The use of monosaccharides for the preparation of novel nickel nanoparticles (NP), which constitute selective hydrogenation catalysts has been reported. For example, immobilization of fructose and Ni(OAc)2 on silica and subsequent pyrolysis under inert atm. produced graphitic shells encapsulated Ni-NP with uniform size and distribution. Interestingly, fructose acts as structure controlling compound to generate specific graphitic layers and the formation of monodisperse NP. These nanoparticles enable the hydrogenation of a series of functionalized and structurally diverse aromatic, heterocyclic and aliphatic alkynes R1CCR2 (R1 = 1-hydroxyoct-8-yl, Ph, cyclohexyl, benzothiophen-3-yl, etc.; R2 = H, Et, Ph, 1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydro-2-benzofuran-5-yl, etc.) to the corresponding alkenes R1CH=CHR2 with excellent stereo- (98-100% Z-alkene formation) and chemoselectivity.
