Wood is actually a natural polymers composite that is easy to process, mainly constituted of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. However, most wood-based functional materials are prepared by phys. methods, which undoubtedly limit the application of wood-based materials. Herein, the wood aerogel (WA) was obtained from wood by delignification and freezing dried. The WA then was fabricated into an unexpected photochromic wood aerogel (PWA) via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) covalently grafting poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl-azo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} (PMAZOM). Both WA and PWA showed good compression resilience. The hydrophobicity of PWA was obviously enhanced because of the surface modification. The color of PWA can change from yellow to orange-red after being irradiated by UV light for 30 s. The color of sample can be reversibly changed to yellow under sunlight for 200 s. The lightweight and photosensitive wood aerogel is potential to apply for optical information storage materials and photosensitive devices.

It was reported that the bis(phosphino)silyl Ni hydride complex (iPr-PSiPInd)NiH, I is an effective pre-catalyst for the (E)-selective semihydrogenation of a broad range of diaryl alkynes and SiMe3-protected terminal alkynes. Complex I exhibited this reactivity under mild conditions (1 atm H2, 25-50°C, and 1-2.5 mol % Ni) to afford the corresponding (E)-alkenes with high selectivity. Stoichiometric experiments revealed that facile alkyne insertion and subsequent alkene isomerization led to the observed selectivity.

The self-assembly behavior and photo-responsive properties of novel azobenzene based copolymers poly(ethylene oxide) monomethyl ether-block-polystyrene-block-{poly[6-(4-methoxy-azobenzene-4′-oxy)hexyl methacrylate]}2 [MPEO-b-PS-b-(PMMAZO)2] with various block lengths of PMMAZO segments in aqueous media were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM, laser light scattering (LLS) and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. It was found that the critical water content for the aggregate formation increases with the PMMAZO weight fraction. By tailoring the mol. structure and copolymer concentration, various self-assembled aggregates were obtained. At a lower concentration, all the copolymers self-assembled into simple vesicles. With increasing the polymer concentration, large compound vesicles were formed. The photo-sensitive properties of the formed aggregates were also studied. Upon irradiation with a polarized light, the aggregates were elongated. Large compound vesicles were found to deform into compact spindles with a very large axial ratio.

Controlling the macroscopic orientation of nanoscale periodic structures of amphiphilic liquid crystalline block copolymers (LC BCPs) is important to a variety of tech. applications (e.g., lithium conducting polymer electrolytes). To study LC BCP domain orientation, a series of LC BCPs containing a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block as a conventional hydrophilic coil block and LC blocks containing azobenzene mesogens is designed and synthesized. LC ordering in thin films of the BCP leads to the formation of highly ordered, microphase-separated nanostructures, with hexagonally arranged PEO cylinders. Substitution on the tail of the azobenzene mesogen is shown to control the orientation of the PEO cylinders. When the substitution on the mesogenic tails is an alkyl chain, the PEO cylinders have a perpendicular orientation to the substrate surface, provided the thin film is above a critical thickness value. In contrast, when the substitution on the mesogenic tails has an ether group the PEO cylinders assemble parallel to the substrate surface regardless of the film thickness value. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.J. A star-shaped and diblock copolymer poly(6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexylmethacrylate)s-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)s with a zinc-porphyrin core (PAzo-b-PNIPAM) is synthesized via consecutive atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRPs). The synthesis involves the preparation of the intermediate poly(6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexylmethacrylate) with a zinc-porphyrin core (por-PAzo) via ATRP, and then por-PAzo is used as a macroinitiator to polymerize N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) via ATRP to gain PAzo-b-PNIPAM. The structures of the target products are characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and UV-vis spectra, and the polydispersity index (PDI) indicates that the mol. weight distribution is narrow and the polymerization is well controlled. Furthermore, the photo- and thermo-responsive properties are also investigated in detail, which demonstrate that the star-shaped diblock copolymer PAzo-b-PNIPAM has a potential application in targeted photodynamic therapy and photo-electro informational storage.

Both temperature- and light-triggered self-healing azobenzene polymer was successfully synthesized via radical copolymerization of 4-(furan-maleimide ethyl) Me methacrylate (MMA-FMI), 4′-(oxyhexyl methacrylate)-4-(oxyfuran-2-carbomethoxy) azobenzene (MMA-FAzo) and 6-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyazobenzene)-hexyl methacrylate at 50°C. The structure of the polymer was characterized by proton NMR (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatog. Interestingly, furan and maleimide thermally reversible groups were introduced into the polymer. After the furan rings on the MMA-FMI were removed at high temperatures, the exposed maleimide groups were further added with the furan rings on the MMA-FAzo to form a crosslinked network. The crosslinked polymer film was still soluble in the anisole after heating, which could further illustrate the thermal reversibility of the polymer film and realized the recyclability and reworkability of the side-chain azobenzene polymer. 1H-NMR could prove that the crosslinked polymer was completely decrosslinked and the polymer was thermoreversible. UV-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectra showed rapid photoisomerization of the polymer, and surface-relief grating formed on the crosslinked PAzo film was also investigated using illumination from a linearly polarized Kr+ laser beam. The surface modulation depth and grating spacing were about 149 nm, and 1.7μm, resp. What is more, the polarized light microscopy showed that the crosslinked polymer film could be self-repaired under the combined action of UV light and heating.

A new triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)monomethyl ether-b-poly(acrylic aid)-b-poly[6-(4-methoxy-azobenzene-4′-oxy)hexyl methylacrylic acid] was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The self-assembly behaviors in aqueous media, pH value and photo-sensitive properties of this copolymer were studied by the means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM (SEM), laser light scattering (LLS) and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. It was found that the copolymer could self-assemble into vesicle structure. With decreasing the pH value, the particle size of the micelles increased sharply obviously bigger when pH<3.4; however, there was not significant change for the particle size of micelles when pH>3.4. Under the irradiation of polarized light, the aggregates were elongated with increasing the irradiation time.
