Microwave-assisted hydroconversion of demineralized Shengli lignite liquefaction residue (DMSLLR) over Ni-B/SiO2 in methanol was investigated under mild conditions. The results show that Ni-B/SiO2 significantly catalyzed DMSLLR hydroconversion by increasing the methanol-extractable fraction of hydroconverted DMSLLR to 87.7% over Ni-B/SiO2 from 62.3% without catalyst. The yields of alkanes, hydroarenes, alkyl arenes, non-substituted arenes, organooxygen compounds, and organosulfur compounds from catalytic hydroconversion of DMSLLR are drastically higher than those from non-catalytic hydroconversion of DMSLLR. Benzo[ghi]perylene is the most abundant condensed arenes detected.

In order to establish the best extraction method for evaluating volatile aroma composition of Zhahaijiao, a traditional Chinese fermented chili product, changes in the aroma compounds of the Zhahaijiao made with japonica rice powder during fermentation were determined comparatively by solid phase micro extraction (SPME) and simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) combined with gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Besides, changes in sensory qualities were also evaluated. SPME could extract 76, 131 and 122 of volatile components from Zhahaijiao fermented for 0, 45 and 90 days, resp., whereas SDE could extract 23, 42 and 82 of volatile components from the three samples, resp. With the extension of fermentation time, the contents of aroma components extracted by SDE increased continuously while those obtained by SPME reached the highest level at 45 days and kept stable. Esters were the major volatile components in the fermentation process. Totally 42-50 and 15-27 volatile esters with relative contents of 46.7%-55.3% and 60.28%-67.28% were extracted from Zhahaijiao fermented for 45-90 days by SDE and SPME, resp. More alcs. (14-21 alcs., accounting for 15.7%-22.6% of the total volatiles) and aldehydes (17 aldehydes, accounting for 5.8%-12.3% of the total volatiles) could be detected from Zhahaijiao fermented for 45-90 days by SPME. Meanwhile, more low-boiling-point and small-mol. compounds were extracted by SPME, while more high-boiling-point compounds were obtained by SDE. The sensory evaluation showed that the 45-day fermented Zhahaijiao had a bright color, special sour taste and mellow flavor. These results showed that SPME combined with SDE allowed more comprehensive and objective evaluation of volatile aroma composition of Zhahaijiao and that the optimal fermentation time for Zhahaijiao made with japonica rice powder was 45-90 days.

A novel glycolipid has been prepared that contains a cluster glycoside with an unusually high affinity for the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPr) and a bile acid moiety that mediates stable incorporation into lipidic particles. The glycolipid spontaneously associated with low-d. lipoproteins (LDL) and high-d. lipoproteins (HDL) within human and murine plasma, and loading of lipoproteins with this glycolipid resulted in an efficient dose-dependent recognition and uptake of LDL and HDL by the liver (and not by spleen) upon i.v. injection into wild-type mice. Preinjection with asialoorosomucoid largely inhibited the uptake, establishing that both HDL and LDL were selectively recognized and processed by the ASGPr on liver parenchymal cells. Finally, repeated i.v. administration of the glycolipid to hyperlipidemic LDL receptor-deficient mice evoked an efficient and persistent cholesterol-lowering effect. These results indicate that the glycolipid may be a promising alternative for the treatment of hyperlipidemic patients who do not respond sufficiently to current cholesterol-lowering therapies.

The in vivo hepatoprotective potential of methanolic extract of Ceasalpinia bonduc (CBLM) has been explored against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced acute liver injury in rats. Treatment of plant extract on CCl4 intoxicated liver significantly reduced the hepatoxicity, along with serum enzymes GPT and GOT. To explore the chem. constituents from CBLM extract, it was fractionated into non-polar to moderately polar fractions (CBLM-H, CBLM-HEt, CBLM-Et, CBLM-EtM, CBLM-M) and subjected to GC/GC-MS anal. Altogether twenty seven (~71%) phytochems. were identified from different fractions by using Electronic Mass Spectral Library GC-MS (NIST 20). Out of which twenty one are first time reported from Ceasalpinia bonduc, fourteen from genus Caesalpinia and ten from family Fabaceae. The identified phytochems. 2-ethyl-2-hydroxy-1,3-dimethylcyclopentanecarboxylic acid, Et ester (21) and 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine,6-hydroxy-N,N-dicyclohexyl (23) are first time identified as plant metabolites. To explore the antimicrobial potential four strains of Gram-pos. and eight strains of Gram-neg. bacteria were used along with pure cultures of five saprophytic fungus (molds) and two strains of yeast were utilized. CBLM-H and CBLMHEt were exhibited praiseworthy antimicrobial potential. CBLM-H showed complete growth inhibition of P. mirabilis and V. cholerae at the concentration of 0.1μg/mL while CBLM-HEt at 0.05μg/mL halted the growth of S. aureus.

Endophytic fungi are now recognized as an excellent source of widely occurring natural products. Fungi are wonderful producers of natural products, mostly secondary metabolites. The vital use of these fungi may provide benefit to current demand for novel biomols. in agriculture, medical and pharmaceutical industries. In this study, endophytic fungi Aspergillus terreus, Cephalosporium sp., Chaetomium sp., Curvularia lunata, Curvularia hawaiiensis, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium solani, Talaromyces assiutensis and Talaromyces trachyspermus isolated from healthy plants and evaluated for nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne javanica, a root-knot nematode. In vitro culture filtrates of these fungi showed strong nematicidal activity by killing juveniles of nematode to varying degree, where F.solani caused 100% mortality after 48 h. n- Hexane fraction of culture filtrate and n-hexane extract of mycelium of F. solani were subjected to GC-MS anal., resulted in the identification of several compounds and some are not reported before from this fungus. Metabolites from endophytic F. solani could be used in the development of antimicrobial agents that can be used in medicine or agrochems. The use of fungal based products offers a unique opportunity to discover novel therapeutic agents to combat various infectious agents and agricultural pests.
