The identification of synthetic antioxidants has considerable significance in food safety. Here, we described the development of a colorimetric sensor array for rapid detection of eight antioxidants in food through the redox reaction between CoOOH and antioxidants in the presence of colorimetric signal indicators. The CoOOH nanoflakes exhibited high catalytic oxidation activity and can independently catalyze oxidation signal indicators showing different colors. The color reaction was inhibited to different degrees in the presence of antioxidants, which resulted in distinct signal response patterns for their discrimination. The method showed good linearity in the range from 50 to 1000 nM for butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylhydroxyanisole (BHA), Pr gallate (PG) and tert-Bu hydroquinone (TBHQ). Moreover, different proportions of antioxidants were located in the middle pattern of each single antioxidant, and showed certain linear relationships among different concentration ratios. Finally, the proposed colorimetric sensor array was used for practical applications where TBHQ and BHT were detected in biscuits and sausages, and BHA and PG were detected in fried pork kebabs, resp. The results were further confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatog., which demonstrated the great potential of the colorimetry sensor array for practical applications.

A survey was carried out to identify the major sex pheromone gland components in 30 species of Australian tortricid moths. Although more than half the species examined had (Z)-11-, (E)-11-, and/or (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetates as the principal components, these compounds were not detected in some plesiomorphic taxa where combinations of (Z)-5 and (Z)-7 or (Z)-8 and (Z)-10 isomers were present. The results are discussed in relation to tortricid classification and current theories on pheromone evolution.

Food additives are used in numerous food products and are characterised by various physicochem. properties. In European member states, their use in food is regulated by the European Union. This work aimed to develop an accurate and high-throughput anal. method enabling the simultaneous determination of additives from different functional classes to facilitate controls and generate occurrence data for exposure assessments. The QuEChERS principle was applied due to its ease of implementation and flexibility to adjust to various food matrixes. However, very polar substances could not be extracted with sufficient recoveries. Consequently, an alternative basic methanol sample-preparation methodol. was developed. After sample preparation, the obtained extracts were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatog. coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Overall, the developed methodol. allowed the quantification of 27 additives from the functional classes of colors, sweeteners, preservatives, and antioxidants in various foods (e.g. beverages, dairies, processed meals). The methods were also validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, matrix effect, limit of quantification, accuracy, repeatability, and intra-laboratory reproducibility. Finally, the methods were successfully applied to eighty-four actual samples. All additives were found below authorised levels. However, irregularities were spotted in labeling.

Living radical polymerization of Me methacrylate (MMA) through the use of benzyl diethyldithiocarbamate (BDC) was studied. The aim was to investigate the role of the concentration, BDC-to-MMA mol ratio, and reaction time upon the mol. weight, polydispersity, and conversion of the product. It was found that the mol. weight and the conversion increase with increase of the concentration at the expense of low polydispersity. The reaction time also played a significant role, especially at a relatively long reaction time where mol. weight, polydispersity, and conversion increased with increasing reaction time. In terms of the mol ratio effect, it was found that there was a critical mol ratio for maximum conversion. The results indicate that the kinetics of polymerization of MMA through the use of a BDC iniferter is different from that in the presence of a conventional initiator.

Zimra, Yael published the artcileButyric acid and pivaloyloxymethyl butyrate, AN-9, a novel butyric acid derivative, induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells, Formula: C10H18O4, the publication is Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology (1997), 123(3), 152-160, database is CAplus and MEDLINE.

It is shown that AN-9 and butyrate induce cell death by apoptosis. Exposure of HL-60 cells to butyrate and AN-9 decreased cell numbers and induced cell differentiation and the appearance of typical apoptotic features. Induction of apoptosis and/or differentiation was dependent on the concentration and the time of exposure to the drugs. The advantage of An-9 over butyrate was further confirmed. AN-9-induced apoptosis occurred after a shorter exposure and at lower drug concentrations than that induced by butyrate. Apoptosis by AN-9 was accompanied by reduction in Bcl-2 expression. Preincubation with antioxidants did not protect HL-60 cells from apoptosis induced by AN-9.

The results demonstrated that oxidants were able to increase the astaxanthin content high up to 11.4 mg g-1 biomass, while pyruvic acid promoted the cell growth and increased the contents of astaxanthin and lipids up to 10.7 mg g-1 and 66.1% dry weight The highest yield (87.0 mg L-1) and productivity (7.3 mg L-1 day-1) of astaxanthin were obtained in parallel with high lipid productivity (459.0 mg L-1 day-1). The correlations between the dosage effect of chem. inducers and metabolites variation were further examined by statistical analyzes. Addnl., C. zofingiensis-derived lipids were estimated to be more viable and feasible as edible oils based on fatty acid characteristics assessment. The present work highlights the effective screening strategy of chem. inducers for enhancing astaxanthin and lipid production and the potential application in mixotrophic C. zofingiensis.

The collision-induced-dissociation (CID) mass spectra of the (M – H) ions of isomeric decenyl and dodecenyl acetates have been determined for 8-keV ions incident on helium collision gas. With the exception of the isomers with double bonds in the 3 and 4 positions, which give very similar CID mass spectra, the CID mass spectra observed are dependent on the double bond position. Of particular note is the specific elimination of olefin by cleavage to the double bond, accompanied by hydrogen migration, for the 6-alkenyl acetates and acetates with the double bond more remote from the acetate function.
