A poly(St-co-EGDMA)@poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-EGDMA) composite polymer was synthesized by precipitation reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization The polymer was investigated as a sorbent for extraction of synthetic food dyes: ponceau 4R, tartrazine, sunset yellow, brilliant blue and erythrosine from soft drinks. The morphol. and composition of the polymer were characterized and confirmed resp. by SEM and Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy. The pH dependence experiment revealed that the adsorption of food dyes by the polymer was pH dependent and the maximum adsorption was achieved at pH 3. Adsorption between the polymer and the dyes was mainly due to electrostatic interaction. Under the optimized pH conditions, the polymer was saturated with the dye solutions at a concentration of about 200μg mL-1 and exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 9μg mg-1. The values were higher than those for polyamide, a sorbent used in the standard method. The recovery from the real samples of the three spiked concentrations 10, 50 and 100μg mL-1 was resp. within the ranges of 83.2-107.2%, 94.5-110.7% and 79.2-111.5%, with a SD within ±4%. The sorbent could be reused more than 10 times with a recovery higher than 80%. The small volume requirement of the sample and sorbent during the sample pre-treatment, indicated that poly(St-co-EGDMA)@poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-EGDMA) was a potential material for food dye extraction in an environment-friendly and economical manner.

The European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana, uses (E,Z)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate as its major sex pheromone component. Through in vivo labeling experiments we demonstrated that the doubly unsaturated pheromone component is produced by Δ11 desaturation of tetradecanoic acid, followed by chain shortening of (Z)-11-tetradecenoic acid to (Z)-9-dodecenoic acid, and subsequently introduction of the second double bond by an unknown Δ7 desaturase, before final reduction and acetylation. By sequencing and analyzing the transcriptome of female pheromone glands of L. botrana, we obtained 41 candidate genes that may be involved in sex pheromone production, including the genes encoding 17 fatty acyl desaturases, 13 fatty acyl reductases, 1 fatty acid synthase, 3 acyl-CoA oxidases, 1 acetyl-CoA carboxylase, 4 fatty acid transport proteins and 2 acyl-CoA binding proteins. A functional assay of desaturase and acyl-CoA oxidase gene candidates in yeast and insect cell (Sf9) heterologous expression systems revealed that Lbo_PPTQ encodes a Δ11 desaturase producing (Z)-11-tetradecenoic acid from tetradecanoic acid. Further, Lbo_31670 and Lbo_49602 encode two acyl-CoA oxidases that may produce (Z)-9-dodecenoic acid by chain shortening (Z)-11-tetradecenoic acid. The gene encoding the enzyme introducing the E7 double bond into (Z)-9-dodecenoic acid remains elusive even though we assayed 17 candidate desaturases in the two heterologous systems.

Spodoptera frugiperda among the China population employs a four-component sex pheromone blend to accelerate male-female allocation and mating behavior. The underlying mol. mechanism has been incompletely elucidated. In the current study, we showed that differences existed between genders toward the four sex pheromone components, including Z9-14:AC, Z7-12:AC, Z9-12:AC, and Z11-16:AC, in terms of electrophysiol. responses and behavioral valences. Male adults were significantly more sensitive to all tested compounds than female adults. Furthermore, ecol. outputs may be related to four pheromone-binding proteins, namely, SfruPBP1, SfruPBP2, SfruPBP3, and SfruPBP4. They formed four distinct clades within the lepidopteran phylogeny, and male adults expressed significantly higher levels of SfruPBP1 and SfruPBP2 than female adults. We observed the highest binding affinities of SfruPBP1 toward all four sex pheromone components. SfruPBP4 had moderate binding affinities for Z7-12:AC, Z11-16:AC, and Z9-12:AC, while SfruPBP2 showed binding toward Z9-14:AC. This observation suggests that SfruPBP1 plays a key role in sex pheromone discrimination and drives sexually biased behavioral decisions toward certain pheromone components. These findings will help to develop behavioral-mediating tools as part of integrated pest management approaches for this cross-border pest.

A special monomer 4-vinylbenzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate (VBDC) was synthesized firstly, and then the cationic copolymerization of VBDC with isobutene was investigated. The results of 1H-NMR, EA and GPC (with UV detector) indicated that VBDC could copolymerize with isobutene and form the copolymer, and the units of VBDC incorporated into copolymer chains increased with the increasing of the feed ratio of VBDC. However, there has apparent discrepancy between the VBDC in the monomer feed and the VBDC incorporated into the copolymer chain, which is probably due to the relatively lower reactivity of VBDC. In the presence of VBDC, the MWD is narrower than that of in absence of VBDC under the similar exptl. conditions. For cumyl Me ether/TiCl4 initiating system, the Mw/Mn could be slightly narrowed from 1.55 (no VBDC) to 1.33 (with VBDC) in the mixed solvents of n-hexane and CH3Cl (15/10, V/V), while cumyl chloride /TiCl4 initiating system, the Mw/Mn is narrowed from about 5.0 (no VBDC) to about 1.5 (with VBDC) with n-hexane and CH2Cl2 (10/10, V/V) as the mixed solvents. When benzyl N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate (BDC) was used as the model compounds instead of the VBDC, the similar results of Mw/Mn were obtained. These results demonstrated that the VBDC functions as the monomer electron donor (ED) in this polymerization system.

A novel ion-bonded discotic complex was prepared from 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis(N,N-dimethylaminopropylaminocarbonylmethoxy)triphenylene (HDTP) and 4′-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (DBC) by ionic self-assembly (ISA) route and characterized by Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectrum. We found that the complex can self-assemble into stable gels in aromatic hydrocarbons. Nanofibers with diameters of 50-130 nm were observed in the gels by transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The FTIR data in conjunction with UV-vis and fluorescence spectra suggested that the aggregation of the complex into elongated fibers in solution was induced by a directional extended network of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions. Based on the experiment anal., we proposed a tentative model of the self-assembly of this two-component gel-phase material.

A broad investigation on alternative source of energy has been going on to find a solution to multi-faceted fossil fuel concerns namely exhaustion of fuels, energy demand, harmful emissions and environmental impact. Biodiesel is an environment-friendly and renewable alternative for diesel. In the present work, Annona seed oil has been assessed as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production A100 was characterized by FTIR and GC-MS. Pr Gallate (PG) was characterized by morphol. study using FESEM. The elemental anal. of PG was measured using EDAX anal. YPSZ coating was found suitable to make out the potential of A100 in diesel engine. PCCU was designed to reduce the emissions by the liquid reductant in the catalyst system. The process optimization was performed by RSM and factorial exptl. design. With the YPSZ coated engine, improved characteristics of combustion and performance were noticed with A100+PG. A significant diminution on CO, HC and smoke emissions were perceived with A100+PG+CE. In addition, the work was expanded with the application PCCU for the lessening of NOx. A gradual decrement in NOx was observed with A100+PG+CE. Subsequently, A100+PG+CE with PCCU was deliberated as more prominent than other fuel samples in view of its engine characteristics.
