Intrinsic self-healing materials designed through the incorporation of noncovalent interactions or dynamic covalent bonds are prized for their ability to recover from mech. damages. However, they often suffer from deteriorated mech. property due to the increased chain mobility. In this work, we reported a high-strength, colorless transparent self-healing polyurethane elastomer through dynamic crosslinking of reversible phenol-carbamate bonds. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and Pr gallate (PG) were used as the dynamic chain extender and dynamic crosslinking agent, resp. They both can be effectively deblocked at mild temperatures ensuring that the self-healing efficiency is not affected by the material formulation. The mech. properties can be tailored in a wide range by varying the crosslink d. and hard segment content, and their combination uniquely determines the material formulation. The phenol-carbamate based polyurethane (PPU) with a hard segment of 60% and a crosslink d. ν of 0.5 mmol cm-3 exhibited a tensile strength up to 46.4 MPa at the break strain of 615% and displayed high elastic resilience. In the meantime, it could be fully healed (ησ = 93%) with 2 h of heating at 100°C after completely cut off. After recycled three times, it still maintained 80% of its original tensile strength. The structural rigidity of the crosslinker PG and the highly reversible phenol-carbamate bond play a crucial role in strengthening the mech. strength while maintaining the self-healing efficiencies at elevated temperatures This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare mech. robust crosslinked polyurethane elastomer with high self-healing efficiency in a cost-effective manner.

Histone modification has emerged as a promising approach to cancer therapy. We explored the in vivo efficacy of a butyric acid derivative, pivaloyloxymethyl butyrate (AN-9), for the treatment of gliomas. Relative to control and single-modality treatments, the combination of AN-9 and radiation significantly inhibited tumor growth and prolonged time to failure in mice bearing glioma xenografts. The enhanced response to radiation was accompanied by inhibition of cellular proliferation and by increased phosphorylation of H2AX, implicating DNA double-strand breaks in the antineoplastic effects of AN-9 and radiation. The data suggest that AN-9 in combination with radiation may be an effective therapy for malignant gliomas.

To inhibit some side reactions in the production of lyocell fiber, it is usually necessary to add a stabilizer into the spinning dope. In this report, the effects of several stabilizers on the spinning dope are investigated using rheometry, viscometry, and UV spectroscopy, and the resulting lyocell fibers are thoroughly analyzed. The results indicate that 2,4,5,7,8-pentamethyl-4-hydro-1,3-benzodioxin-6-ol (PBD) has the best comprehensive effect among stabilizers used individually, but that butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) has the least impact on the color of spinning dope and resulting fibers. Overall, compound stabilizers are more effective than individual stabilizers. The compound stabilizer comprising BHT:PBD = 1:1 influenced the color of spinning dope the least, so the obtained fibers had the highest whiteness. The compound stabilizer comprising PG:PBD = 9:1 (PG = Pr gallate) had the most significant stabilizing effect on spinning dope, and the obtained fibers had the greatest breaking strength.

Four cyclic octapeptides were designed from ascidiacyclamide [cyclo(-Ile-Oxz-D-Val- Thz-)2] (ASC, 1) to investigate the effects of oxazoline (Oxz) and thiazole (Thz) rings on the structures and cytotoxicities of the peptides. Cyclo(-Ile-Thz-D-Val-Oxz-)2 (2) had the same number of Oxz and Thz rings as ASC, but the ring positions were switched. Cyclo(-Ile-Oxz-D-Val-Thz-Ile-Thz-D-Val-Thz-) (3) and cyclo(-Ile-Thz-D-Val-Oxz-Ile-Thz-D-Val-Thz-) (4) contained one Oxz and three Thz rings within the mol. All Oxz rings were substituted with Thz in cyclo(-Ile-Thz-D-Val-Thz-)2 (5). These analogs had new Oxz and Thz blocks forming the 24-membered ring. Based on CD spectra and X-ray diffraction analyses, the structures of all four analogs were classified as square ASC forms. But the structures of 2 and 5 differed from the original square form of 1, and they showed no cytotoxicity. The structure of 3 was very similar to that of 1, and 3 showed 10 times greater cytotoxicity than 1. Although no definite structure of 4 was obtained, it showed three times greater cytotoxicity than 1. It appears that the position and number of Oxz residues are essential determinants in the structure-cytotoxicity relationship of ASC analogs.

Kutsumizu, Shoichi published the artcileSystematic exploitation of thermotropic bicontinuous cubic phase families from 1,2-bis(aryloyl)hydrazine-based molecules, Application In Synthesis of 50670-76-3, the publication is Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (2018), 20(12), 7953-7961, database is CAplus and MEDLINE.

Rational design of mols. that exhibit a thermotropic bicontinuous cubic (Cub) phase has been earnestly desired. In this work, we describe the suitable selection of a mol. motif that has enabled the systematic exploitation of eight new series of Cub-phase mols. with sym. mol. cores, N-n (1), PB-n (2), S-n (3), and PEB-n (4), and unsym. cores, B-N-n (5), B-PB-n (6), B-S-n (7), and B-PEB-n (8). These eight series all originate from achiral chain-core-chain type rod-like mols. that exhibit two types of Cub phases, an achiral Ia3d phase, and a chiral phase. All the Ia3d phases formed were found to be isomorphous structures, with their cell dimensions being proportional to the core size, and the same was true for the latter chiral phase. We demonstrated that the formation is mainly governed by the segregation between core and alkyl moieties of the mols., and thus, by the weight fraction of the core portion fcore. This work also demonstrates that the central dicarbonylhydrazine linkage bearing intermol. hydrogen bonding ability exhibits a pinning effect that prevents slippage of π-stacks of mols., which is critical for the formation of the two Cub phases that are composed of chiral networks with twisted mol. arrangements. In each series, the emergence of spontaneous chirality formation that occurred in the chiral phase was limited to between 0.36 and 0.50 in the range of fcore. An interesting insight was that the introduced unsymmetry of the mol. core strongly influenced the phase behavior, which lowered the temperature range of Cub phases to around that of the smallest core series B-n, while the high temperature limit (Tc) was roughly proportional to the core size, as determined by the strength of intermol. π-π interactions.

A review. The continuous improvement of living standards is related to higher requirements for the freshness and taste of food. For example, synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) are added to fats and fried foods as food additives to minimize the oxidative rancidity of oils and fats. Hence, the global use of SPAs is increasing year by year. Di-Bu hydroxytoluene is one of the widely used SPAs, often in combination with Bu hydroxyanisole or gallate SPAs. The extensive use of these compounds makes them and their transformation products to be widespread in various environmental matrixes, including indoor dust, wastewater, river water, sewage sludge, and sediment, as well as human samples, such as nails and urine, at concentrations varying from nanogram per g (ng/g) to microgram per g (μg/g). Animal experiments have shown that high-dose SPA exposure is toxic, which may lead to DNA damage and mismatches and the development of cancerous tumors. Since the biosphere shares the same set of genetic codes, humans and animals have many identical or similar feedback mechanisms and information pathways. Therefore, the damage of SPAs to animals may also threaten human health. This review discusses the properties, occurrence, anal., and environmental health risks of typical SPAs, including Bu hydroxyanisole, di-Bu hydroxytoluene, tert-butylhydroquinone, Pr gallate, octyl gallate, and lauryl gallate, used as food additives. In addition, AO2246, which is used in food packaging bags, is also considered. Future research directions on SPAs and their transformation products (TPs) are identified and discussed.

Abstract: Pr gallate (PG) as one of the most important additives has been widely used to prevent or slow the oxidation of foods in the food industry. In this work, Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 composite is synthesized through two hydrothermal processes. With visible light irradiation, the Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 composites modified PEC platform displays a superior anode photocurrent signal. The PEC sensor showed a wide linear range from 1 x 10-10 to 1 x 10-3 mol L-1 with a detection limit as low as 0.05 x 10-10 mol L-1. The Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 photoelectrochem. (PEC) sensor is designed and characterized by electrochem. impedance. Compared with GCE/BiVO4 and GCE/Cu3(PO4)2, the GCE/Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 has a higher photocurrent response. In addition, the sensor is highly selective for samples containing other antioxidants. Furthermore, the sensor can be used to detect PG in edible oil samples with satisfactory results. The recoveries of Pr gallate in edible oil ranged from 95.5 to 101.8%. The results show that Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 composites can be used to analyze PG in different edible oil samples, which are beneficial for food quality monitoring and reduce the risk of PG overuse in food.
