In this paper, a method for the enzymic modification of pectin, in which gallic acid (GA) and Pr gallate (PG) were grafted onto pectin mols. in an aqueous/organic two-phase system catalyzed by lipase, was proposed. The potential reaction mechanism was explored through UV-Vis, FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and d. functional theory. Results suggested that the lipase played a dual role during the modification by catalyzing the hydrolysis of Me ester bonds of pectin in the aqueous phase and the esterification between the 4-OH of GA and PG and the -COOH of pectin in the organic phase. Moreover, the effects of GA and PG on the antioxidant and the antibacterial activities of pectin were evaluated, and results showed that the antioxidant and the antibacterial activities of modified pectin were better than those of native pectin. The effect of modified pectin on the quality of fresh bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) was further studied. Results suggested that, compared to control group, the total viable count, histamine level, malondialdehyde content and acid value of bass fillets treated with modified pectin were significantly reduced, whereas the sensory score was significantly increased.

The volatile composition of dichloromethane extracts of preputial glandular secretions (PGS) from intact and castrated male Brandt’s voles Lasiopodomys brandtii were analyzed by using gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirty-three volatile compounds were detected and were present in nearly all scent donors, and 27 had previously been reported as insect pheromone components. Castration did not eliminate any compounds; however, it significantly suppressed the relative quantity of ten early-eluting, low mol. weight components. These included seven saturated and unsaturated acetates, one hexanoate, and two saturated octanoates. In particular, E,E-farnesyl acetate (FA) was the most abundant compound in the PGS. FA and other components might be candidates for male-produced pheromones. Two-choice behavioral assays of females revealed that low concentrations of raw PGS (0.056%) and FA (5 ppm in water v/w) were attractive, whereas high concentrations (0.56% and 50 ppm, resp.) were repellent. This suggested that FA might act as a male pheromone in a dosage-dependent manner. Extremely high variability of the relative quantities of almost all detected compounds among individuals indicated the inter-individual dissimilarities of PGS and consequent possibilities to communicate individuality to other conspecific members.

Li, Ao published the artcileAntioxidant effects of gallic acid alkyl esters of various chain lengths in oyster during frying process, Category: esters-buliding-blocks, the publication is International Journal of Food Science and Technology (2021), 56(6), 2938-2945, database is CAplus.

Summary : The antioxidant effects of gallic acid (GA) and its alkyl esters including Me gallate, Et gallate, Pr gallate, Bu gallate (GA-C4), octyl gallate, lauryl gallate, hexadecyl gallate and octadecyl gallate in frying oil (soybean oil) and oyster during frying were investigated. Rancimat induction period (RIP) assay indicated GA and its alkyl esters effectively improved the oxidative stability of soybean oil according to the ‘polar paradox’; i.e., the antioxidant effects of the polyphenols decreased in lipid system with the increasing of hydrophobicity. Results also indicated that GA and its alkyl esters all effectively retarded lipid oxidation in oyster tissue according to parameters including RIP, peroxide value and ESR assays. Moreover, the antioxidant efficiency in oyster increased with the alkyl chain length until GA-C4, and thereafter, the antioxidant effects decreased, similar to the ‘cut-off effect’. This study provides basic data for improving the oxidative stability of seafood during frying.

Wang, Chan published the artcileOptimization of a pheromone lure by analyzing the peripheral coding of sex pheromones of Spodoptera frugiperda in China, Formula: C14H26O2, the publication is Pest Management Science (2022), 78(7), 2995-3004, database is CAplus and MEDLINE.

Sex pheromones of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, show differences in composition and proportions in different geog. populations, but always contain Z9-14:OAc as the major component. Odorant receptor neurons (ORNs) housed in the long trichoid sensilla (TS) of male antennae are essential to detect female-released sex pheromones in moths. In this study, we identified seven components from pheromone gland extracts of female S. frugiperda in the Yunnan population from China, including (Z)-7-dodecen-1-yl acetate (Z7-12:OAc), (Z)-9-tetradecenal (Z9-14:Ald), (Z)-9-dodecen-1-yl acetate (Z9-12:OAc), (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (Z9-14:OAc), (E)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (E11-14:OAc), (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (Z11-14:OAc) and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-yl acetate (Z11-16:OAc) at a ratio of 1.2:4:0.8:79.1:1.6:1.6:11.7 by gas chromatog. coupled with mass spectrometry. Gas chromatog.-electroantennog. detection showed that Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z11-16:OAc are the male antennal active components. Peripheral coding of pheromones in males was investigated by single sensillum recording. Five functional neurons housed in three types of TS were identified based on profiles of neuronal responses, which are responsible for attractive component Z9-14:OAc, synergistic components Z7-12:OAc, Z11-16:OAc, interspecific pheromones (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol (Z9-14:OH) and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadien-1-yl acetate (Z9,E12-14:OAc), resp. Wind tunnel and field tests demonstrated that a ternary combination of Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z11-16:OAc at a ratio of 88:1:11 shows the strongest attractiveness to males. An optimized pheromone blend of Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z11-16:OAc in an 88:1:11 ratio was identified for monitoring the invasive pest S. frugiperda in China. Five functional ORNs encoding intra- and interspecific pheromones were identified in male antennae, of which three neurons encode attractive component Z9-14:OAc, synergistic components Z7-12:OAc and Z11-16:OAc, resp., and the other two neurons encode interspecific pheromones Z9-14:OH and Z9,E12-14:OAc, sep. 2022 Society of Chem. Antioxidant activities of 1-o-galloylglycerol (GG), Pr gallate, rosmarinic acid (RA), tocopherols (TOC), and 1:1 combinations of GG/RA and GG/TOC were evaluated using in vitro assays including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+.), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Soybean oil stripped of TOC was utilized as bulk oil and as the oil phase in O/W emulsions for accelerated oxidation test with the selected phenolic compounds Efficacies of antioxidants were evaluated by monitoring total oxidation (TOTOX) values and fatty acid profiles of oil and O/W samples during the accelerated oxidation In bulk oil, GG outperformed other singular antioxidants, preventing 39.04% of oxidation for ω-3 fatty acids with a TOTOX value of 166.68. In emulsions, TOC outperformed other singular antioxidants, preventing 38.04% of oxidation with a TOTOX value of 196.72. Considering the polarities of the antioxidants and our testing systems, these results provide supporting evidence for the polar paradox theory.

Elucidation of the chem. components of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) facilitates the characterization of atm. contamination sources and associated human exposure risks. In the present study, we employed a high-throughput anal. approach to investigate the abundance and distribution of 163 plastic additives in ambient PM2.5 collected from 94 different sites across the Pearl River Delta region, China. These chems. are from six categories, including organophosphate esters (OPEs), phthalate esters (PAEs), PAE replacements, bisphenol analogs, UV stabilizers, and antioxidants. Ninety-three of them exhibited a detection frequency greater than 50% in PM2.5, while the combined concentrations of target plastic additives ranged from 610 to 49,400μg/g (median: 3500μg/g) across sites. By category, concentrations of PAEs (median: 2710μg/g) were one to three orders of magnitude greater than those of other groups, followed by PAE replacements (540μg/g) and OPEs (76.2μg/g). Chem.-dependent exposure risks to PM2.5-bound plastic additives were characterized via the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient (HQ) approaches, which resulted in two different risk prioritization systems. Although the HQ approach suggested no or very low health concerns when considering individual chems., the complexity of co-concurrent chems. in PM2.5 raises the concern on potential health risks from exposure to airborne particles and a cocktail of chem. components.
