Olive mill wastewater was converted into bio-oil via thermochem. liquefaction with alc./water mixtures in an autoclave (998 mL). The influence of operating conditions on the yield of liquefaction products was investigated. Liquefaction experiments were performed at various reaction temperatures in the range of 240-320 °C. Exptl. results indicated that alc. (methanol or ethanol)/water mixtures had synergistic effects on olive mill wastewater direct liquefaction. The ratio 50% (weight/weight) co-solvent of either ethanol-water or methanol-water and a reaction temperature of 280 °C were found to be the most effective. Under these conditions and for a reaction time of 30 min, the bio-oil yield was 92.31 wt% for ethanol-water and 77.97 wt% for methanol-water. The bio-oil produced with methanol-water mixture has higher energy content (43.20 MJ/kg) compared to the one obtained with ethanol-water mixture (39.21 MJ/kg). In addition, Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry analyses showed high esters concentrations and low free fatty acid content in the obtained bio-oils.

This paper is primarily a case study on transesterification of avocado oil for the synthesis of biodiesel. Many operational parameters and components were studied in an attempt to identify the optimal process for non-catalytic transesterification, and di-Me carbonate (DMC), an acyl acceptor was identified as key to one very efficient methodol. Non-catalytic transesterification experiments using DMC and/or methanol (MeOH) were conducted under varied temperatures and varied amounts of silica loading. The maximum yield of fatty acid Me esters (FAMEs) of 92.96% was shown to be achievable at 380 °C. The miscibility of avocado oil and DMC was seen to be a key factor in providing a strategic means for delaying thermal cracking of FAMEs. Lastly, this study reported that the optimal mass ratio of silica to oil was over 8 at 380 °C.

The results demonstrate that the mineral pigments were mainly HgS, As2S3, the golden area in the lacquer film layers mainly contained elements Au and Ag, the lacquer ash layers mainly included several layers of stucco and fiber layers arranged alternately, the lacquer sap was urushi, and heat-bodied tung oil was also present in the lacquer. Furthermore, several kinds of lacquering techniques, which demonstrated traditional Chinese lacquering and the rigid hierarchy of funerals in feudal dynasties, are also identified in this investigation.

A member of the filamentous fungal genus Paecilomyces and a yeast from the genus Wickerhamomyces were isolated from heavily contaminated B20 storage tanks from multiple Air Force bases. Although these taxa were linked to microbiol. influenced corrosion in situ, precise measurement of their corrosion rates and pitting severity on carbon steel was not available. In the experiments described here, we directly link fungal growth on B20 biodiesel to higher corrosion rates and pitting corrosion of carbon steel under controlled conditions. When these fungi were growing solely on B20 biodiesel for carbon and energy, consumption of FAME and n-alkanes was observed The corrosion rates for both fungi were highest at the interface between the B20 biodiesel and the aqueous medium, where they acidified the medium and produced deeper pits than abiotic controls. Paecilomyces produced the most corrosion of carbon steel and produced the greatest pitting damage. This study characterizes and quantifies the corrosion of carbon steel by fungi that are common in fouled B20 biodiesel through their metabolism of the fuel, providing valuable insight for assessing MIC associated with storing and dispensing B20 biodiesel. Biodiesel is widely used across the United States and worldwide, blended with ultra-low-sulfur diesel in various concentrations In this study, we were able to demonstrate that the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces AF001 and the yeast Wickerhamomyces SE3 were able to degrade fatty acid Me esters and alkanes in biodiesel, causing increases in acidity. Both fungi also accelerated the corrosion of carbon steel, especially at the interface of the fuel and water, where their biofilms were located. This research provides controlled, quantified measurements and the localization of microbiol. influenced corrosion caused by common fungal contaminants in biodiesel fuels.

Lipid derived free radical in soymilks were studied by combining 5,5-dimethyl-pyrroline-l-oxide (DMPO) spin trap, chloroform-methanol extraction and ESR (ESR) spectroscopy. Five lipid derived free radical adducts: DMPO-X·, DMPO-L·, DMPO-R·, DMPO-LOO·, and DMPO-RO· were presented in soymilks. The total amounts of spins increased as the soaking temperature increased from 4°C to 50°C and the soaking pH increased from 3 to 9 and in paralleled with the diffusion of soybean exudates to soaking water. Prolonged soaking of soybean at 50°C resulted in a higher signal intensity of DMPO-R· than that of DMPO-LOO·. Soybean lipoxygenases (LOXs) were responsible for the formation of lipid derived free radicals in soymilks. Soybean exudates affected the total amounts of lipid radicals in linoleic acid (LA) – LOX model system. The relative signal intensities of DMPO-R· and DMPO-LOO· were depended on the contents of soybean exudates in the system.

Background: Research evidence has established the beneficial effects of diet in cancer prevention; various epidemiol. studies have suggested that olive oil component could play a role in decreasing cancer risk. This systematic review and meta-anal. aims to investigate the association between olive oil consumption, cancer risk and prognosis. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE and Google Scholar databases (end-of-search: May 10, 2020). Pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated with random-effects (DerSimonian-Laird) models. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses and meta-regression anal. were also performed. Results: 45 studies were included in the meta-anal.; 37 were case-control (17,369 cases and 28,294 controls) and 8 were cohort studies (12,461 incident cases in a total cohort of 929,771 subjects). Highest olive oil consumption was associated with 31% lower likelihood of any cancer (pooled RR = 0.69, 95%CI: 0.62-0.77), breast (RR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.52-0.86), gastrointestinal (RR = 0.77, 95%CI: 0.66-0.89), upper aerodigestive (RR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.60-0.91) and urinary tract cancer (RR = 0.46, 95%CI: 0.29-0.72). Significant overall effects spanned both Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean participants, studies presenting a multivariate and a univariate anal. and all subgroups by study quality. Conclusions: Olive oil consumption seems to exert beneficial actions in terms of cancer prevention. Addnl. prospective cohort studies on various cancer types and survivors, as well as large randomized trials, seem desirable.

It was extracted by Et acetate, then the extract was analyzed by Gas Chromatog.-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Identification of compounds was achieved according to their GC retention indexes (RI) and database search using the library of NIST05, as well as a comparison of the fragmentation pattern of the mass spectra with data published in the literature. Seventy-three compounds were separated by gas chromatog. Based on the NIST05 spectral library and corresponding literature information, fifty-three compounds were identified. Their relative percentage of contents accounted for 95.62% of the outflow peak. Some of the identified peaks are 9-Octadecenoic acid, Me ester(E)(18.50%),9-Tricosene(Z)(8.30%), 13-Docosenamide (E)(5.26%) and Myristic acid glycidyl ester (3.11%). This is the first report of chem. constituents of the Et acetate extract of Nigrospora sp. using GC-MS, which offer some theor. basis for the further exploration and application of this mushroom.

Antioxidant activity was determined in terms of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging and metal chelating assays. Results revealed that the genotype from higher altitude exhibits higher antioxidant potential than the genotype from lower altitude. A significant pos. correlation has been observed between altitude and total phenolic content, whereas a significant neg. correlation between altitude and 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of both genotypes.

Long-horned grasshopper (Ruspolia differens Serville) is a tasty delicacy in over 20 African countries. This study evaluated the impact of diverse post-harvest thermal treatment (blanching, boiling, toasting, and deep-frying) on the nutrients, total flavonoid content and sterols preservation of R. differens products. Crude protein, ash, and fiber of R. differens was drastically reduced by deep-frying technique. There was increase in Omega-3 (α-linolenic acid), Omega-6 fatty acid (linoleic and arachidonic acids) and sterols [(22Z)-27-Norergosta-5,22-dien-3β-ol, cholesterol, campesterol, cholest-4-ene-3-one and β-sitosterol] and flavonoids (2-3 folds) during blanching compared to other techniques. The iron and zinc content increased significantly in blanched and boiled products of R. differens. Thus, losses of nutrients, total flavonoid content and sterols during processing of R. differens for food can be mitigated by employing blanching technique, which is cheaper and least time-consuming. The implications of these dietary and therapeutic compounds on human nutrition and health are discussed.

The enzyme retains more than 59% of its activity after 14 days of storage and can be recycled for more than 7 cycles with remaining high activity at 93.7%. Developed enzyme was then subjected to microwave irradiation for transesterification of palm oil to produce biodiesel. Highest biodiesel recovery achieved from microwave assisted immobilized lipase catalyzed transesterification of palm oil was 70.2%. The phys. properties of produced biodiesel was evaluated and fulfilled the ASTM general requirement for fuels.
