Alkene hydroarylation forms carbon-carbon bonds between two foundational building blocks of organic chem.: olefins and aromatic rings. In the absence of electronic bias or directing groups, only the Friedel-Crafts reaction allows arenes to engage alkenes with Markovnikov selectivity to generate quaternary carbons. However, the intermediacy of carbocations precludes the use of electron-deficient arenes, including Lewis basic heterocycles. Here we report a highly Markovnikov-selective, dual-catalytic olefin hydroarylation that tolerates arenes and heteroarenes of any electronic character. Hydrogen atom transfer controls the formation of branched products and arene halogenation specifies attachment points on the aromatic ring. Mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-substituted alkenes yield Markovnikov products including quaternary carbons within nonstrained rings.

Antitumor and antiviral activities of various aroma samples, including cinnamic acid, β-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, nerolidol (synthetic and natural samples), trans,trans-farnesol, farnesol (isomeric mixture), longifolene, geranic acid and a farnesol-rich ylang-fraction were investigated using HeLa and Jurkat cell lines. Using a CytoTox-96-Assay we observed strong antitumor effects of natural- and synthetic nerolidol-samples at concentrations less than 5 μM. Furthermore, synthetic nerolidol reduced the number of HeLa and Jurkat cells to 50% (CC50) at concentrations which were more than ten times lower compared with the EDs required to achieve 50% cytotoxicity (ED50). Antiviral studies were performed to investigate inhibitory effects of the compounds on mouse polyomavirus propagation in 3T6 cells. Remarkable inhibition of viral activity was demonstrated by synthetic nerolidol at CC50 3.2±1.5 μM and natural nerolidol at CC50 1.2±0.4 μM All other compounds, however, did not show any inhibition against this virus.

Cattleya, an orchid, attracts many people in the world, and most of Cattleya species emit pleasant perfumes. We analyzed the volatile components of 17 kinds of Cattleya species flowers by using a head space GC-MS. We newly found 1,3-dimethoxy-5-Me benzene (DMMB) in the volatile component of C. schroderae and 1,4-dimethoxy benzene (DMB) in C. intermedia. It was already reported that DMMB and DMB showed sedative effect on a consciousness level and promoted the recovery of skin barrier function on human beings. We also found Et 4-methoxy benzoate (E4MB) in the volatile component of C. percivaliana, and E4MB showed sedative effect on human sympathetic nervous activity.

In this work, we studied similarities and differences between 70% ethanol in water extract (70EE) and essential oils (EOs) obtained from propolis, black poplars (Populus nigra L.) and aspens (P. tremula L.) to ascertain which of these is a better indicator of the plant species used by bees to collect propolis precursors. Composition of 70EE was analyzed by UPLC-PDA-MS, while GC-MS was used to research the EOs. Principal component analyses (PCA) and calculations of Spearman’s coefficient rank were used for statistical anal. Statistical anal. exhibited correlation between chem. compositions of propolis and Populus buds’ 70EE. In the case of EOs, results were less clear. Compositions of black poplars, aspens EOs and propolises have shown more variability than 70EE. Different factors such as higher instability of EOs compared to 70EE, different degradation pattern of benzyl esters to benzoic acid, differences in plant metabolism and bees’ preferences may be responsible for these phenomena. Our research has therefore shown that 70EE of propolis reflected the composition of P. nigra or complex aspen-black poplar origin.

Nitrosyl triflate (TfONO) can be generated in situ from tetra-n-butylammonium nitrite and triflic anhydride (1:1) in CH2Cl2 solution at ca. -30°C. It acts as a powerful and soluble nitrosating agent with a wide range of olefinic or aromatic substrates. Nitrous anhydride (O=N-O-N=O) can be generated in the same way using tetra-n-butylammonium nitrite and triflic anhydride (2:1) in CH2Cl2 solution at ca. -30°C. Each reagent has been isolated and characterized. They react with olefins to give different products.
