The conversion was monitored by HPLC. After completion of the reaction, 4 M hydrochloric acid was added to adjust a pH<1 before the resulting suspension was stirred for overnight at 4 C. The crude product was collected by filtration, washed with cold dist. water (2×500 mL) and dried in vacuo at max. 45 C. Isochroman-3,4-dione-4-oxime was obtained as a colorless solid (145.9 g, 90.4 HPLC-area %, 74% yield).1H-NMR (DMSO-d6): delta=13.3 (s, 1H), 8.34 (d, J=7.4 Hz, 1H), 7.54-7.41 (m, 3H), 5.46 (s, 2H) ppm; 13C-NMR (DMSO-d6): delta=162.3, 140.2, 133.2, 130.2, 129.0, 127.9, 125.4, 125.0, 68.3 ppm; mp=179-182 C. Methyl 2-(2-(chloromethyl)phenyl)acetate. Hydrogen chloride gas was bubbled though a solution of 3-isochromanone (1.2 g, 8.1 mmol) in methanol (30 mL) for 3 minutes. Reaction stirred at room temperature for 8 hours. Mixture was diluted with water (70 mL). Mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (2¡Á40 mL). Combined organic layers were washed with brine (20 mL). Mixture was dried (magnesium sulfate), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Title compound was obtained as clear colorless oil in 90% yield. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): delta=7.40-7.26 (m, 4H), 4.67 (s, 2H), 3.80 (s, 2H), 3.69 (s, 3H).

A. o-[(carboxymethyl)benzyl]triphenylphosphonium bromide. 3-Isochromanone (30 g), Mann, F. G. and Stewart, F. H., Journal of the Chemical Society 2819 (1954) is added with swirling to 150 ml of hydrobromic acid (48%) at 80 C. The resulting mixture is then heated on a steam bath with occasional swirling for 10 min and thereafter poured into a mixture of crushed ice and water (750 g). The resulting mixture is then extracted with ethyl acetate and the ethyl acetate extracts washed with a mixture of water and brine (1:1) and dried over magnesium sulfate. Concentration under reduced pressure yields a residue of crude o-(bromomethyl)phenylacetic acid. (Crystallization of the crude product from methylene chloride yields a product with melting point 130-131 C. and a C:H ratio of 46.90:4.09).
