The new protocol resulted in an estimated 56% less combined diferulate isomers in which only one acylated arabinosyl unit remained, and 170% more combined diferulate isomers conjugated to two arabinosyl units. Conclusions Overall, the new protocol for mild acidolysis of grass cell walls is both recovering more ferulate- and p-coumarate-arabinose conjugates from the arabinoxylan and cleaving less of them down to free ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, and dehydrodiferulates with just one arabinosyl ester. This cleaner method, especially when coupled with the orthogonal method for measuring monolignol hydroxycinnamate conjugates that have been incorporated into lignin, provides an enhanced tool to measure the extent of crosslinking in grass arabinoxylan chains, assisting in identification of useful grasses for biomass applications.

ZnO in ionic liquid under microwave irradiation: A novel medium for synthesis of phloroglucide derivatives as antimicrobial agents

Owing to the wide applications and significance of phloroglucide analogues in organic synthesis, pharmacology and industry, there is considerable interest in the synthesis of these compounds. Nevertheless, there are few methods for preparation of these compounds. Here we reported a simple, clean, and highly efficient procedure for the green synthesis of tricyclic polyhydroxyl aromatic compounds. Microwave-assisted alkylation reaction between 4-substituted-2, 6-bis(chloromethyl)phenols and various phenol derivatives, in the presence of zinc oxide (ZnO) in 1-buty1-3-methylimidazolium hexaflourophosphate ([Bmim]PF6), affords the title compounds in short duration with high yields. We have synthesized 18 derivatives of the title compounds 3a-3r by this procedure. Chemical structures of all synthesized compounds have been confirmed by spectrophotometric methods such as IR, NMR and mass spectroscopy. Some of the synthesized compounds have been screened for their antimicrobial activities. Antifungal and antibacterial activities have been evaluated against different species of microorganisms including gram positive and gram negative bacteria as well as fungi. Broth microdilution method as recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute has been used for this purpose. The results show compounds 3i, 3k and 3m have the best antibacterial and antifungal activity against most of the examined species. Compounds 3b, 3f, 3o, 3p and 3q also show good activity against some species.

Here, we investigated the potential anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects of BHB using a rodent PTSD model, induced by single prolonged stress (SPS). Male, Sprague-Dawley rats were employed in this study. Repeated administration of BHB attenuated SPS-induced anxiety-related behaviors evaluated by the elevated plus maze test. SPS increased the serum levels of TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta. In contrast, BHB administration partially attenuated the increase of serum TNF-alpha. These findings demonstrate that BHB exerts its anxiolytic effects, possibly by inhibiting systemic TNF-alpha. Hence, BHB may be a novel therapeutic candidate for the treatment of PTSD.

Assessment of plastic ingestion by pole-caught pelagic predatory fish from O’ahu, Hawai’i

Although the frequency of occurrence of plastic ingestion in the large-sized dolphinfish and tunas taken by the Hawai’i longline fishery is very low (frequency of occurrence < 5% of sampled individuals), the ingestion of plastic in smaller-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line gear by commercial and recreational fishers has not been investigated. This study examined ingestion of >0.25 mm marine plastic debris (MPD) by four predatory fish species caught by commercial fishers around the Main Hawaiian Islands, and documented ingestion in three species: 85.7% of albacore tuna (n = 7), 40.0% of skipjack tuna (n = 10) and 12.5% of dolphinfish (n = 8). Yellowfin tuna (n = 10) did not contain any MPD, probably owing to the high proportion of empty stomachs (60%). For skipjack tuna, the frequency of occurrence of MPD ingestion was significantly higher for the smaller-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line (40%), compared with the larger-sized specimens caught with longlines (0%). For dolphinfish, the frequency of occurrence of MPD ingestion was similar for the similar-sized specimens caught with pole-and-line and with longlines. The ingested MPD items were micro-meso plastics, between 1 and 25 mm. While most ingested items were fragments, albacore also ingested line and skipjack also ingested sheets. The predatory fishes ingested light MPD items that float in sea water, but there were species-specific differences in their polymer composition: albacore contained more polypropylene and polyethylene, and skipjack contained more elastomers, characterized by a high percentage of ester plasticizers. Altogether, these results suggest that albacore and skipjack tunas ingest plastic of different types and polymers. Yet more research is needed to understand how differences in vertical distribution, foraging ecology and diet influence the MPD sampled by these predatory fish species.

Synthesis, Biological Evaluation and In silico Studies of Compounds Based on Tryptophan-Naproxen-Triazole Hybrids
