A new cyclic peptide from the fibrous root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla

A new cyclic peptide, Pseudostellarin K (1), together with thirteen known compounds, including two cyclic peptides (2 and 3), one beta-carboline alkaloid (4), two amides (5 and 6), three phenylpropanoids (7-9) and other compounds (10-14), were isolated from the fibrous root of Pseudostellaria heterophylla. Preparation and characterization of composite quasi-solid electrolytes composed of 75Li(2)S center dot 25P(2)S(5) glass and phosphate esters

Mechanical properties and ionic conductivities of solid electrolytes are important factors influencing the performance of all-solid-state batteries. This study investigates composite quasi-solid electrolytes composed of Li2S-P2S5 glass and a phosphate ester, prepared via planetary ball milling, and the relative densities of the powder-compressed pellets, formed using the composite quasi-solid electrolytes. Dense pellets of the Li2S-P2S5 glass electrolyte are obtained via addition of phosphate esters; the relative densities increase from 90.6% to 93.1%, without the ionic conductivities decreasing, upon addition of a small quantity of tris (2, 2, 2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate to the Li3PS4 glass. The addition of small quantities of phosphate esters to sulfide solid electrolytes is effective in improving the formability of these solid electrolytes.

Lipase-catalysed polycondensation of levulinic acid derived diol-diamide monomers: access to new poly(ester-co-amide)s

Research toward bio-based polymers is an expanding field due to environmental concerns. A library of new aliphatic diol-diamide monomers with different chain lengths between the two amido groups was synthesized from sustainable levulinic acid and various linear aliphatic diamines (C-2-C-10). The monomers were prepared by diacylation of the diamines followed by reduction of the ketones to alcohols. These secondary diols were successfully recognized by an enzyme and polymerised in solution through a lipase-catalysed polycondensation. Poly(ester-co-amide)s with number-average molecular weights (M-n) in the range of 1300-7200 g mol(-1) were obtained, with dispersities between 1.5 and 1.8. An improvement of the M-n value was observed upon increasing the monomer chain length. The variation of the aliphatic diol allows modulating the thermal properties of the final polymers. The glass transition temperatures were found to be between -23 degrees C and 0 degrees C. The polymers containing a long aliphatic segment (C-8-C-10) were able to crystallize (melting temperature of 90-97 degrees C). TGA analyses showed that the ester linkages degrade at lower temperatures than the amide bonds. The stability of the latter was found to be higher when the number of methylene units increased from 2 (355 degrees C) to 10 (378 degrees C). Therefore, many attempts have been made to develop an effective vaccine against APEC O1. In fact, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen of APEC O1 has been shown to be a potent antigen for inducing specific protective immune responses. However, the detailed structure of the O-antigen of APEC O1 is not clear. The present study demonstrates the first synthesis of a pentasaccharide repeating unit of LPS derived from virulent E. coli O1 and its conjugate with BSA. ELISA tests using the semi-synthetic glycoconjugate and the APEC O1 immune chicken serum revealed that the pentasaccharide is a glycotope candidate of APEC O1, with great potential as an antigen for vaccine development.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borax complex-based spray coating for the decontamination of radioactive Cs from wide-area surfaces

A spray coating based on an adsorbent/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-borax complex was developed to remove radioactive cesium from surfaces by adsorption for wide-area surface decontamination. Two aqueous solutions of borax and PVA containing adsorbents, namely, Prussian blue, bentonite, and sulfur-zeolite, were simultaneously sprayed on surfaces, which subsequently self-generated a gel-like coating via a borate-diol ester bond between borax and PVA. The spray coating adhered adequately to vertical surfaces for at least 1 h due to its good viscoelasticity and displayed Cs-137 removal efficiency (56.966%) twice that of a commercial strippable coating (DeconGel, 27.248%) on porous cement surfaces because the sulfur-zeolite in the coating has an excellent Cs distribution coefficient (4.768 x 10(6) mL/g). In addition, our coating could be easily removed from the surface after use by simply rinsing with water, and it left no residue, even on a porous surface such as cement, due to the reversible PVA-borax complexation. In contrast, commercial strippable coating and chemical gels leave a residue. Moreover, the used adsorbent that captured Cs-137 could be easily separated using simple filtration for a direct solidification procedure before final disposal/storage, whereas the commercial strippable coating and chemical gels require expensive treatment, such as incineration, to remove organic components. In a demonstrative test using a commercial spray-coater, the spray coating exhibited a fast spray rate (1.25 m(2)/min), high stability (> 1 h), and easy removal by simply rinsing with tap water.

A phase change material embedded composite consisting of kapok and hollow PET fibers for dynamic thermal comfort regulation

Kapok fiber, an agricultural product, is a typical cellulosic fiber with the features of thin cell wall and large lumen. Herein, a microtubule-based composite with high porosity of 98.03 % was prepared using kapok fibers and hollow PET. The kapok fiber-based composite successfully encapsulated a phase change material (PCM), that is a fatty acid ester of myristic acid and tetradecyl alcohol (MA-TD), in the microtubules by vacuum impregnation. The SEM showed that the PCM was encapsulated in the lumens of the fibers with a calculated percentage of 40.5 %. This condition provided the composite a basic thermal insulation from air pockets in the composite and a dynamic thermal insulation from the PCM. The kapok/PET/MA-TD could absorb 76.8 J/g latent heat in the comfort temperature range of 24 degrees C – 42.3 degrees C or release 77.4 J/g latent heat in the comfort temperature range of 29.7 degrees C – 10.5 degrees C. It withstood repeated laundry and exhibited robust leakage resistance to continuous heating/cooling under pressure. In addition, the composite was successfully used to dynamically regulate the temperature with obvious thermal regulating capacity in the simulated cooling/hot environments. Such material will be a robust candidate for dynamic heat regulating and thermal insulating applications.

Development, Characterization, and Pharmacological Investigation of Sesamol and Thymol Conjugates of Mefenamic Acid

BACKGROUND Prodrug technology was extensively employed in the drug discovery processes and many approved drugs in the pharmaceutical industry were developed by the prodrug based synthetic approach. The current research work investigates the effect of the prodrug approach on the mefenamic acid by synthesizing the ester conjugates with natural antioxidants such as sesamol and thymol. METHODS Synthesis of two ester prod rugs, mefenamic acid-sesamol conjugate and mefenamic acid-thymol conjugate by coupling method using DCC / DMAP, subjected to physicalchemical characterization, spectral characterization (IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and Mass spectra), in-silico studies, in-vivo biodistribution studies and pharmacological evaluation such as anti-inflammatory, ulcerogenecity, activity in the brain as well as histopathological evaluation. RESULTS The ester prodrugs of mefenamic acid which upon administration would release the parent drug as a result of enzymatic or non-enzymatic hydrolysis in the desired areas with enhanced anti-inflammatory activity and reduction in the gastro intestinal toxicity. In-silico studies showed the docking score of mefenamic acid on the beta-secretase enzyme is – 7.834 and the bio-distribution study showed the enhanced distribution of the mefenamic acid in the brain. Pharmacological study and histopathology studies using the brain tissues showed the protective effect of mefenamic acid in the brain. CONCLUSIONS Antioxidant conjugates of mefenamic acid showed sustained release of the mefenamic acid and enhanced anti-inflammatory activity with reduction in the gastric toxicity. The present investigation also revealed that the enhanced transport profile across blood brain barrier and considerable protective effect in the brain against neurodegenerative conditions.

Integrated Green and Enzymatic Process to Produce Omega-3 Acylglycerols from Echium plantagineum Using Immobilized Lipases

This work presents an original approach to develop an integrated process to improve the nutritional characteristics of natural oils, starting with the extraction from raw material by ecofriendly methods, followed by the production of novel acylglycerols using immobilized lipases. Specifically, 2-monoacylglycerols (2-MAG) enriched in omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA) were synthesized by selective ethanolysis of extracted Echium plantagineum oil using the lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL). Different reaction conditions were investigated to minimize acyl migration and to ensure the purity of final products. The biocatalyst produced in our laboratory by the immobilization of TLL on Sepabeads C-18 reached the maximum theoretical amount of 2-MAG (33%) in only 2 hour at mild reaction conditions (25 degrees C), achieving a product enriched in omega-3 SDA (up to 25%). Moreover, the produced biocatalyst exhibited higher stability than commercial lipases. The average activity after five cycles was 71%, allowing several reutilization cycles and developing a feasible enzymatic process. Finally, 2-MAG were used as starting material to synthesize structured triacyclglycerols (STAG) through transesterification with caprylic acid ethyl esters using the lipase from Rhizomucor miehei (RML) in solvent-free systems. The use of molecular sieves in combination with RML immobilized on Sepabeads C-18 was demonstrated to be an extraordinarily fast strategy to produce pure STAG (100% in 1 hour), four times higher than the activity showed by commercial biocatalyst. Thus, the enzymatic processes developed in this study open a range of possibilities to synthesize omega-3 acylglycerols with improved characteristics, proving the usefulness of immobilized lipases to produce novel lipids.
