Li, Dan;Liu, Nan;Zeng, Min;Ji, Jinzhao;Chen, Xi;Yuan, Jinying research published 《 Customizable nano-sized colloidal tetrahedra by polymerization-induced particle self-assembly (PIPA)》, the research content is summarized as follows. Colloidal mols. (CMs) are colloidal clusters with mol.-like symmetry and architecture, generated from the self-assembly of nanoparticles with attractive patches. However, the large-scale preparation of patchy nanoparticles remains challenging. Here, we synthesize CH4-like colloidal tetrahedra (CTs) in a scalable way by aqueous polymerization-induced particle self-assembly (PIPA), where isotropic diblock copolymer spheres are used as seeds. During PIPA, the newly formed third block aggregates into attractive patches, which bridge the isotropic spheres together to form CTs in situ, as a result of surface energy minimization. This approach surpasses previous reports in its scalability, high yield and versatility. For example, the purity of as-prepared CTs reaches 78.3% at a concentration of 100 g L-1, which allows the 3D reconstruction of the tetrahedral structure by single particle electron microscopy anal. The versatility of PIPA is illustrated by preparing CMs of tunable size, valency and various chem. structures. In addition, the architecture of the CMs can be manipulated after the PIPA process simply by the addition of ethanol, for example, the CTs can be transformed into ladder-like structures, paving a new avenue to access hierarchical nanoscale self-assemblies.

A facial white light-emitting diode (LED) induced reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) of methacrylate monomers was successfully conducted by using sub-ppm-level organic dyes as organocatalysts. The organic dyes contained Eosin B (EB), Rose bengal (RB), Eosin Y (EY) and 3,3,5,5-Tetraiodophenolsulfonphthalein (TIPS) with the merits of metal free, non-toxic and inexpensive. The resulted poly (methacrylate) with controlled mol. weights and polydispersity indexes were obtained either under white LED irradiation or green and blue LED. The polymerization of various functional methacrylates demonstrated that this polymerization system with dyes as organocatalysts had high monomer versatility. Chain extensions copolymerization verified the living features of reversible deactivation radical polymerization

Li, Qiuyu;Lu, Zhen;Yang, Hongjie;Cai, Jingyu;Yin, Xiangyu;Zhao, Yulai;Xiao, Longqiang;Hou, Linxi research published 《 Photoinduced organocatalyzed controlled radical polymerization feasible over a wide range of wavelengths》, the research content is summarized as follows. In this paper, photoinduced controlled radical polymerization (PI-CRP) provided excellent temporal and spatial control over a wide range of irradiation wavelengths (450-850 nm). Polymers with controllable mol. weight and narrow mol. weight distribution were synthesized using amphiphilic ethidium iodide (EI) as a catalyst and 2-iodine-2-methylpropanenitrile as an initiator in controlled radical polymerization of hydrophilic methacrylates in aqueous solution and oleophilic methacrylates in bulk under the irradiation of white, blue, green, red, and near-IR (NIR) light, and sunlight. Moreover, no polymerization occurred without light irradiation, indicating that the polymerization was an ideal photo “on”-“off” switchable system. The obtained polymers have high chain-end fidelity and act as macroinitiators to generate various block copolymers. The feasibility of polymerizations under the irradiation of such a wide range of wavelengths by an organic catalyst both in bulk and aqueous solutions was an unprecedented feature. The advantages of this polymerization included simple preparation of catalysts, adsorption of broadband light, ease of operation and applicability to a wide range of polymer designs.

Kumru, Baris;Giusto, Paolo;Antonietti, Markus research published 《 Carbon nitride-coated transparent glass vials as photoinitiators for radical polymerization》, the research content is summarized as follows. Benign polymerization routes offer new perspectives in current polymer technol. Especially for automated or continuous flow synthesis of polymers, new devices and principles have to be considered by the means of minimizing addition or separation sequences as well as the type of a polymer initiation. Near-UV and visible light-induced polymerization utilizing metal-free semiconductor polymeric carbon nitride (pCN) as heterogeneous photocatalyst was a first step into this direction. Moving from heterogeneous powder catalysis (which still requests catalyst separation) to surface photocatalysis via coating glass tubes or vials with pCN thin films is presented. Performance and effectivity of those photoactive reactors are proven by free radical photopolymerization of variety of monomers. Reusability of vials is demonstrated via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization-assisted block copolymer synthesis. This strategy eliminates the necessity of adding or removing initiators, works at room temperature, and offers a platform for cheap and effective polymer synthesis at the age of automated synthesis.

Kitanosono, Taku;Lu, Fangqiu;Masuda, Koichiro;Yamashita, Yasuhiro;Kobayashi, Shu research published 《 Efficient Recycling of Catalyst-Solvent Couples from Lewis Acid-Catalyzed Asymmetric Reactions in Water》, the research content is summarized as follows. Bioinspired supramol. architectures were used to compartmentalize highly charged aqua scandium ions into chiral hydrophobic scaffolds for Lewis acid-catalyzed asym. reactions. Recycling without significant loss in catalytic performance was a formidable task, especially for Lewis acid-catalyzed reactions. This was because Lewis basic impurities derived from starting materials, products and water were highly competitive ligands for both substrate binding and metal complexation, thus poisoning the Lewis acids and leading to their leaching. Even when basic aniline was used, the architecture allowed for effective suppression of Sc3+ leaching and for reuse of solvent-catalyst couples in asym. ring-opening reactions without deactivation. Application to asym. thia-Michael addition and hydroxymethylation was also demonstrated. The successful recycling in highly Lewis basic environments underpins the exceptionally high robustness of the chiral Lewis acid catalyst.

Kametani, Yuki;Ouchi, Makoto research published 《 One-Pot Preparation of Methacrylate/Styrene Alternating Copolymers via Radical Copolymerization and Alcoholysis Modification: Sequence Impacts on Glass Transition Temperature》, the research content is summarized as follows. A series of methacrylate/styrene alternating copolymers were efficiently and systematically synthesized via alternating copolymerization of saccharin methacrylamide (1) with styrene and subsequent one-pot alcoholysis transformation with alcs. The saccharin amide bond in 1 was stable enough that 1 was used as a bench-stable monomer, but the bond became reactive toward alcs. after the copolymerization Thanks to the specific feature, the postpolymn. modification could be performed under mild conditions despite easy handling of the monomer. The quant. transformation as well as the alternating sequence were certainly supported by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS analyses. The alternating copolymers carrying relatively short alkyl pendants expressed lower glass transition temperatures than those of the statistical counterparts. Moreover, the alternating copolymerization was controlled via a RAFT polymerization system, affording a unique block copolymer composed of alternating copolymer segments.
