In the present work, we explored the possibility of using a novel stabilizing ligand namely Et 2-mercaptopropionate for the synthesis of CdTe quantum dots (QDs). The QDs were synthesized and stabilized by the ligand and it was realized to be emitting at 560 nm. Extensive microscopic and photo phys. characterization were carried out in order to unearth the nature of the QDs synthesized. Interestingly, it was observed that, the photoluminescence emission of as synthesized QDs were getting quenched linearly in the presence of Cu2+, which prompt us to make use of these QDs for the detection of Cu2+ ions in aqueous media. A detailed mechanism of quenching was also proposed. The linear range over which the QDs was selective to Cu2+ ions was from 0.5 nM to 129.5 nM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.5 nM providing a pathway for the QDs based Cu2+ probe.

Organosilicon compounds and polymers have found wide applications as synthetic building blocks and functional materials. Hydrosilylation is a common strategy toward the synthesis of organosilicon compounds and polymers. Although transition-metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation has achieved great advances, the metal-free hydrosilylation polymerization of dienes and bis(silane)s, especially the one suitable for both electron-rich and electron-deficient dienes, is largely lacking. Herein, the authors report a visible-light-driven metal-free hydrosilylation polymerization of both electron-rich and electron-deficient dienes with bis(silane)s by using the organic photocatalyst and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst. The authors achieved the well-controlled step-growth hydrosilylation polymerizations of the electron-rich diene and bis(silane) monomer due to the selective activation of Si-H bonds by the organic photocatalyst (4CzIPN) and the thiol polarity reversal reagent (HAT 1). For the electron-deficient dienes, hydrosilylation polymerization and self-polymerization occurred simultaneously in the presence of 4CzIPN and aceclidine (HAT 2), providing the opportunity to produce linear, hyperbranched, and network polymers by rationally tuning the concentration of electron-deficient dienes and the ratio of bis(silane)s and dienes to alter the proportion of the two polymerizations A wide scope of bis(silane)s and dienes furnished polycarbosilanes with high mol. weight, excellent thermal stability, and tunable architectures.

Solvent-free reversible deactivation radical polymerization of myrcene, a naturally occurring terpenoid monomer, with high regioselectivity was developed recently. Here, this green polymerization system is further improved to reach increased yields and produce polymers with high molar mass but still low dispersity and regioregular microstructure. To this end, two initiators (dibenzoyl peroxide, DBPO; azobis(isobutyronitrile), AIBN) at 65, 90, and 130 °C were applied, and it was demonstrated that these varying conditions have a huge effect not only on the monomer conversion and the molar mass of the product, but also on the microstructure of the resulting polymyrcene. The polymerizations utilized two trithiocarbonate chain-transfer agents, and were similar in yields, molar masses, and dispersity of the produced polymyrcene, but progressed differently for the diverse initiator-temperature pairs. Generally, in all systems, pseudo-first-order kinetics, linear increase of molar mass with conversion, and low D values were found as a result of controlled polymerization The systems using AIBN and DBPO initiators at 90 and 130 °C, resp., have rate constants of propagation (kappp) lower than the decomposition rates (kd) of initiators, likewise important to control the polymerizations At 130 °C, also branching occurred at the higher stage of the reaction, and lower regioregularity developed during the polymerization as a consequence of the favorable junction formation at elevated temperature and increased viscosity. Generally, compared to the previous study on the reversible deactivation radical polymerization of myrcene via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization process, significantly higher conversions (30 → 65%) and increased chain length (9 → 40 kDa) were reached. The dispersity values for these polymerizations remained as low as 1.3-1.6, and also regioregular microstructures (up to 94%) were detected.

Direct perfluoroalkylation of aliphatic thiols was performed in the presence of sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate (Rongalite). Reaction of mercaptoalkanoic esters with trifluoromethyl bromide gave the corresponding trifluoromethylthio ethers. Condensation of alkane dithiols with perfluoroalkyl iodides led mainly to fluorinated dithioethers. These alkylation reactions are interpreted as occurring via in situ formation of dialkyl disulfides. A mixture of Rongalite and water was introduced to a mixture of Me mercaptoacetate and sodium phosphate in DMF. The flask was evacuated and bromotrifluoromethane (gas) was introduced while the pressure was maintained at 4.5 bar. After work-up the yield of Me [(trifluoromethyl)thio]acetate was 48%.

The chemokine stromal cell-derived factor-1 α (SDF1 α) is strongly involved in organogenesis, as well as inflammation and tissue repair, and acts by attracting different kinds of stem and progenitor cells. Therefore, it constitutes an interesting compound for drug development in regenerative medicine. However, it is prone to inactivation by proteolytic cleavage in human serum. Accordingly, it has to be stabilized against enzymic degradation for any therapeutic application. We synthesized a palmitoylated SDF1α analog by native chem. ligation. Both the N-terminal thioester and the C-terminal palmitoylated fragment were prepared by solid-phase peptide synthesis. The activity of the refolded and pure compound was determined by an inositol phosphate turnover assay and revealed no loss in receptor activation. Addnl., resistance to proteolytic degradation was investigated in porcine liver homogenates and showed a near sevenfold increased half time. This study is a proof of principle approach for the lipidation of SDF1α and provides a basis for further engineering of the chemokine in order to increase its therapeutic value.
