In this work, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and Schiff base chem. was combined to fabricate self-healing adhesives. An esterification reaction was first performed to prepare Et cellulose based macroinitiators. Then, a “”grafting from”” RAFT of vanillin methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate was used to obtain graft copolymers. DSC result showed that the glass transition temperature was manipulated via changing the ratio of vanillin and fatty acids moieties. NMR spectrum anal. demonstrated the presence of aldehyde groups, which were available for the dynamic crosslinking to generate a network as self-healing adhesives. The adhesive test showed that the shear strength could reach 0.81 MPa with a self-healing efficiency of 98.7%. The bottlebrush structures of copolymers and reversibility of Schiff base chem. might collaboratively contribute to the high self-healing efficiency. This study provides a facile way to fabricate high-performance self-healing adhesives from Et cellulose and renewable resources.

A luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) consists of loaded luminophores and a waveguide that can concentrate direct and diffuse sunlight, which is a crucial ingredient for developing solar glasses. In general, the loading concentration in LSCs is strongly restricted (typically <1 weight%) to mitigate concentration-induced quenching (CIQ), reabsorption losses, and aggregation-induced scattering (AIS). However, this will induce transmission losses in particular for thin-film LSCs. To address all aforementioned issues, large-Stoke-shift LSCs with different loadings are simply prepared based on thiolated gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) dispersed in the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix. In contrast to conventional luminophores with a severe CIQ effect, photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs) can be significantly enhanced up to ≈25% (from 0.5 to 1%) even under high loading of ≈26 weight%. Such PL-QY enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of the suppression of non-radiative relaxation and enhancement of radiative decay processes due to surface ligand-matrix coordination. In addition, our high-loading LSCs also exhibit excellent optical quality and film uniformity without introducing noticeable AIS effects. Thanks to those unique properties, eco-friendly LSCs with high optical d. can still hold a high edge-emission efficiency of ≈70% due to minimal reabsorption and scattering losses, yielding an external quantum efficiency of ≈15% at the wavelength of 400 nm. The analyses reveal only very low amounts of plasma proteins associated with the micelles. The results indicate that preventing the reorganization of micelles (equilibrium with unimers) by core-crosslinking is crucial to reduce the interaction with plasma proteins.

Super-hydrophobic porous absorbents are convenient, low-cost, efficient and environment-friendly materials in the treatment of oil spills. In this work, a simple Pickering emulsion template method was employed to fabricate an interconnected porous poly(DVB-LMA) sponge. A new co-Pickering stabilization system of Span 80 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles was used to prepare ultra-concentrated internal phase water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. After further polymerization, the resulting sponges were generated, which exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity due to the super-hydrophobicity and super-lipophilicity. Furthermore, the characterization results indicated that the composites had superior thermal stability, low d., high porosity and a flexible three-dimensional porous structure. Besides, the addition of nickel ferrite nanoparticles provided the materials with extra magnetic operability. High oil adsorption capacity (up to 36.9-84.2 g g-1), high oil retention, fast adsorption rate and superior reusability allowed the materials to be applied in the treatment of oily water.

Filtration control of drilling fluid plays an important role in the process of wellbore construction and ensures the success of drilling operation. A swellable polymer microsphere (SPM) of methylmethacrylate (MMA), Bu acrylate (BA), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) was synthesized with suspension polymerization Its swelling property was characterized by oil adsorption capacity measurement. First, the effect of SPM on the filtration and rheol. properties of virgin organic clay dispersion was investigated. Then the filtration and rheol. properties of mineral oil-based drilling fluid in the presence of SPM were elucidated under the resp. conditions of hot aging temperature, oil to water ratio and d. Furthermore, the filtration control properties between SPM and two traditional filtration loss additives including modified lignite and asphaltic additive was compared. Addition of SPM exhibited obvious influence on the viscosity of oil-based drilling fluid especially at high concentration of 3 w/v%, therefore, a concentration of lower than 1.5 w/v% was recommended. After hot aging at 200°C, the oil-based drilling fluid containing 1 w/v% SPM exhibited an API filtration loss decrease of 85%, and HTHP filtration loss decrease of 79% in comparison with the base fluid. After hot rolling at 180°C, the API filtration loss decreased by 2%, 24% and 53%, and the HTHP filtration loss decreased by 42%, 54% and 65% resp. when 1 w/v% asphaltic additive, modified lignite and SPM are in the presence of the base fluid. Besides decreasing the filtration loss volume under high temperatures, incorporation of SPM also improves the filter cake quality of oil-based drilling fluid. SPM is capable of adsorbing considerable base oil and become swellable. The swellable polymer microspheres with favorably deformable and compressible properties can effectively fill the voids of filter cake and reduce the permeability, which leads to low filtration loss and minimization of solids invasion.

Solvothermal precipitation co-polymerization can be expected in scale-up fabrication of various monodisperse functional microspheres free of any surfactant and additive.

The friction-reduction properties of these polymers were assessed with 0.5 wt% solutions in hexadecane by means of rolling-sliding macroscopic tribol. tests. Block copolymers with roughly equal block lengths and moderate mol. weights were significantly more effective at friction reduction than all other architectures investigated. They also displayed lower friction coefficients than glycerol monooleate-a com. used additive.
