This study aimed to compare prognostic difference between intravascular cooling devices (ICDs) and surface cooling devices (SCDs) in targeted temperature management (TTM) recipients.Adult TTM recipients using ICD or SCD during 2012 to 2016 were included in this nationwide observational study. The outcome was survival to hospital discharge and good neurological outcome at hospital discharge.Among 142,905 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients, 1159 patients (SCD, n = 998; ICD, n = 161) were investigated. After propensity score matching for all patients, 161 matched pairs of patients were available for analysis (SCD, n = 161; ICD, n = 161). We observed no significant differences in the survival to hospital discharge (SCD, n = 144 [89.4%] vs ICD, n = 150 [93.2%], P = .32) and the good neurological outcomes (SCD, n = 86 [53.4%] vs ICD, n = 91 [56.5%], P = .65). TTM recipients were categorized by age groups (elderly [age >65 years] vs nonelderly [age ≤65 years]) to compare prognostic difference between ICD and SCD according to the age groups. In the nonelderly group, the use of ICD or SCD was not a significant factor for survival to hospital discharge or good neurologic outcome. Whereas, the use of ICD was significantly associated with good neurological outcome (odds ratio, 3.97; 95% confidence interval, 1.19 – 13.23, P = .02) compared with SCD in the elderly group.There were no significant differences in the survival to hospital discharge and the good neurological outcomes between SCD and ICD recipients. However, the use of ICD might be more beneficial than SCD in elderly patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic factors associated with the sustained return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival to hospital discharge in traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (TOHCA) patients without prehospital ROSC. METHODS: We analyzed Korean nationwide data from the Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Surveillance, and included adult TOHCA patients without prehospital ROSC from January 2012 to December 2016. The primary outcome was sustained ROSC (>20 minutes). The secondary outcome was survival to discharge. Multivariate analysis was performed to investigate factors associated with the outcomes of TOHCA patients. RESULTS: Among 142,905 cases of OHCA, 8,326 TOHCA patients were investigated. In multivariate analysis, male sex (odds ratio [OR], 1.326; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.103-1.594; P=0.003), and an initial shockable rhythm (OR, 1.956; 95% CI, 1.113-3.439; P=0.020) were significantly associated with sustained ROSC. Compared with traffic crash, collision (OR, 1.448; 95% CI, 1.086-1.930; P=0.012) was associated with sustained ROSC. Fall (OR, 0.723; 95% CI, 0.589- 0.888; P=0.002) was inversely associated with sustained ROSC. Male sex (OR, 1.457; 95% CI, 1.026-2.069; P=0.035) and an initial shockable rhythm (OR, 4.724; 95% CI, 2.451-9.106; P<0.001) were significantly associated with survival to discharge. Metropolitan city (OR, 0.728; 95% CI, 0.541-0.980; P=0.037) was inversely associated with survival to discharge. Compared with traffic crash, collision (OR, 1.745; 95% CI, 1.125-2.708; P=0.013) was associated with survival to discharge. CONCLUSION: Male sex, an initial shockable rhythm, and collision could be favorable factors for sustained ROSC, whereas fall could be an unfavorable factor. Microscopic droplets integrating multiple functionalities are essential in the microcompartmentalized related reaction and applications. Solvent exchange is a simple approach for producing femtoliter surface droplets by the transit oversaturation created at the mixing front of a solution by a poor solvent. But it remains challenging to control the compositions in nanodroplets. Our hypothesis is the new liquid component can be added to the pre-formed surface droplets at certain ratios controlled by solvent exchange. In this work we investigate the growth of the droplets during addition of a new component by solvent exchange. Two-component droplets were formed on a microdomain patterned substrate as highly ordered arrays. The phys. and chem. parameters that control droplet composition and a possible application of the binary droplet arrays were presented in this work. The added amount of the second component in the binary droplet can be quant. controlled by the solution and flow conditions. The theor. prediction of the component ratio based on the droplet diffusive growth dynamics mode shows a good agreement with the exptl. results. The results show that the solvent exchange on the surface with pre-formed droplets provides a highly efficient method to tune the droplet compositions to desired ratio. The unique feature of this approach enables a gradient structure of droplet composition over the surface, demonstrated by an application of different microlens performance on a surface.

Creating load-bearing hydrogels with superior mech. strength and toughness is of vital importance for promoting the development of polymer hydrogels toward practical applications. Herein, a type of composite hydrogel is facilely fabricated employing simple and effective UV irradiation one-pot method by introducing cheap and available nanosilica sol into hydrophobic association poly(acrylamide-lauryl methacrylate) (HAPAM gels). Composite hydrogels exhibit enhanced mech. strength (compression stress reaching 4.4 MPa) and toughness (compression hysteresis energy achieved is 151.15 kJ m-3) compared to HAPAM gels. Composite hydrogels also demonstrate rapid self-recovery behavior (95.91% stress recovery and 92.19% hysteresis energy recovery after restoration for 15 min, resp.) and favorable fatigue-resistant ability without the help of external stimuli at room temperature based on the cyclic loading-unloading compression measurements. The simple and effective design strategy may help the development of hydrogel materials toward practical applications for soft sensors, tissue engineering, and actuators.

Sterically-stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles (a.k.a. micelles) are prepared directly in non-polar media via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). More specifically, a poly(lauryl methacrylate) chain transfer agent is chain-extended via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of Me methacrylate (MMA) to form sterically-stabilized spheres at 20% weight/weight solids in n-dodecane at 90°. Both fully hydrogenous (PLMA39-PMMA55 and PLMA39-PMMA94) and core-deuterated (PLMA39-d8PMMA57 and PLMA39-d8PMMA96) spherical nanoparticles with mean core diameters of approx. 20 nm were prepared using this protocol. After diluting each dispersion in turn to 1.0% weight/weight with n-dodecane, small-angle X-ray scattering studies confirmed essentially no change in spherical nanoparticle diameter after thermal annealing at 150°. Time-resolved small angle neutron scattering was used to examine whether copolymer chain exchange occurs between such nanoparticles at elevated temperatures Copolymer chain exchange for a binary mixture of PLMA39-PMMA55 and PLMA39-d8PMMA57 nanoparticles produced hybrid (mixed) cores containing both PMMA55 and d8PMMA57 blocks within 3 min at 150°. In contrast, a binary mixture of PLMA39-PMMA94 and PLMA39-d8PMMA96 nanoparticles required 8 min at this temperature before no further reduction in neutron scattering intensity could be observed These observations suggest that the rate of copolymer chain exchange depends on the d.p. of the core-forming block. We aimed to develop a sustainable adsorbent for bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor that seriously threatens human health. First, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was reacted with 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide to obtain a surface initiator (SI) for the grafting of polystyrene (PS), poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA), and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDM) through ARGET-ATRP. These polymers may have favorably interacted with BPA, which led to its removal. SIs were characterized by FTIR and XPS to corroborate the grafting of 2-bromoisobutyryl and determine its abundance. X-ray diffraction anal. indicated retained crystal morphol. with decreased MCC crystallinity. FTIR, thermogravimetric, and elemental analyses confirmed the grafting of MCC with polymers and revealed their composition PS and PLMA had a minor effect on the crystallinity and morphol. of MCC microfibers, whereas grafting PDM decreased the crystallinity of cellulose and the particle size. MCC grafted with polymers were tested as adsorbents of BPA by measuring the equilibrium uptake and removal through column filtration. PDM was found to endow cellulose with superior capacity of removing BPA, which was enhanced with increased amount of grafted polymer. A comparison of MCC grafted with PDM with activated carbon as adsorbents of BPA suggested the superior performance of the developed materials based on the largest maximum uptake.

Lignin has been extensively explored as a renewable precursor for materials fabrication. However, its low reactivity is one of the main challenges for material development. Herein, we presented a simple and effective biorefinery strategy to directly prepare reactive lignin with lower mol. weight and enhanced reactivity for the fabrication of high-strength self-healing adhesives. The role of 2-naphthol to suppress lignin condensation during the organosolv pretreatment of two woody biomasses was demonstrated by the less condensed structures and decreased mol. weights of lignin. This promoted the enzymic hydrolysis of pretreated poplar from 50.2% to 62.9% at the low enzyme loading. Furthermore, the resultant lignins showed 51.7% increase in the modification efficiency during an esterification reaction. Lignin based macro-initiator was used to initiate “”grafting from”” reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of furan methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate to generate copolymers with tunable properties. Then, the occurrence of reversible Diels-Alder reaction between furan rings and maleimide crosslinker enabled the formation of dynamic network as self-healing adhesive. The adhesiveness anal. revealed that the highest adhesive shear strength reached 6.3 MPa, which was significantly higher than most of previous adhesives used on wood chips. Furthermore, after 10 times self-healing, the shear strength still accomplished 39.6% of original strength. This study has presented an upgraded biorefinery strategy to tune the properties of lignin and its interesting utilization to fabricate functional materials, providing new insights into materials and biorefinery society.

The advent of hydrogel-based strain sensors has attracted immense research interest in artificial intelligence, wearable devices, and health-monitoring systems. However, the integration of the synergistic characteristics of good mech. properties, self-adhesiveness, self-healing capability and high strain sensitivity for fabricating hydrogel-based strain sensors is still a challenge. Here, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel composed of a polyacrylamide (PAAm)/chitosan (CS) hybrid network is fabricated for wearable strain sensors. The PAAm network is cross-linked by hydrophobic associations, and the CS network is ionically cross-linked by carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs). These two networks are further interlocked by phys. entanglement and hydrogen bond interactions. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent flexibility, puncture resistance and self-healing capability because of the efficient energy dissipation of the dynamic crosslinking network. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibit self-adhesive behavior on various materials, including polytetrafluoroethylene, wood, glass, aluminum, rubber and skin. Notably, the hydrogels can be applied as soft human-motion sensors for real-time and accurate detection of both large-scale and small human activities, including joint motions, speaking, breathing, and even subtle blood pulsation. Therefore, it is anticipated that the flexible, self-adhesive, self-healing and conductive hydrogel-based strain sensor will have promising applications in artificial intelligence, soft robots, biomimetic prostheses, and personal health care.
