The risk of fomite-mediated transmission in the clinic is substantially increasing amid the recent COVID-19 pandemic as personal protective equipment (PPE) of hospital workers is easily contaminated by direct contact with infected patients. In this context, it is crucial to devise a means to reduce such transmission. Herein, we report an antimicrobial, antiviral, and antibiofouling trifunctional polymer that can be easily coated onto the surface of medical protective clothing to effectively prevent pathogen contamination on the PPE. The coating layer is formed on the surfaces of PPE by simple spray-coating of an aqueous solution of the trifunctional polymer, poly(DMA-PEGMA-QA). To establish an optimal ratio of antifouling and antimicrobial functional groups, we performed antifouling, antibacterial, and antiviral tests using four different ratios of the polymers. Antifouling and bactericidal results were assessed using Staphylococcus aureus, a typical pathogenic bacterium that induces an upper respiratory infection. Regardless of the molar ratio, polymer-coated PPE surfaces showed considerable antiadhesion (�5-75%) and antibacterial (�5-87%) efficacies soon after in contact with pathogens and maintained their capability for at least 24 h, which is sufficient for disposable PPEs. Further antiviral tests using coronaviruses showed favorable results with PPE coated at two specific ratios (3.5:6:0.5 and 3.5:5.5:1) of poly(DMA-PEGMA-QA). Moreover, biocompatibility assessments using the two most effective polymer ratios showed no recognizable local or systemic inflammatory responses in mice, suggesting the potential of this polymer for immediate use in the field.

Nonaqueous Pickering emulsions exhibit promising applications in many industrial areas but have been relatively less studied in the past. Core cross-linked copolymer worms with mixed shells were prepared by seeded reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) quasi-solution polymerization Specifically, polystyrene-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-P4VP) diblock copolymer worms were first prepared via RAFT-mediated dispersion polymerization in toluene under the given conditions using PS as both the macro-CTA and the stabilizer block. After the chem. crosslinking of P4VP cores, PS-P4VP diblock copolymer worms were chain-extended with LMA in DMF/toluene (1:9, weight ratio) mixed solvents, producing core cross-linked PS-P4VP-PLMA worms with PS/PLMA mixed shells. The as-prepared core cross-linked PS-P4VP-PLMA worms with mixed PS/PLMA shells were further utilized as Pickering emulsifiers for the generation of nonaqueous n-hexane-in-DMF Pickering emulsions. A Bernoullian distribution of hydrophilic and hydrophobic side chains grafted onto a linear backbone was constructed by random copolymerization When the polymer chains associate in water, a sequence matching problem occurs because of the drastic heterogeneity in sequence: this is believed to generate local curvature mismatches which deviate from the ensemble-averaged interfacial curvature. Periodic folding of the self-assembled bilayer stabilizes the curvature instability as recurring hinges. Reminiscent of chain-folded lamellae found in polymer crystallization, this new liquid crystalline mesophase, characterized as bilayer-folded lamellae, manifests itself as an anisotropically alignable birefringent hydrogel with structural hierarchy across multiple length scales.

In this work, poly(alkylmethacrylates) based on poly(n-alkyl methacrylate)s (PnAMAs), i.e., poly(hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA), poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA), and poly(stearyl methacrylate) (PSMA), with similar molar masses (Mn), are synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer technique using a high-throughput approach. Analyses by dynamic light scattering (DLS) of PnAMAs in nonpolar solvents show the presence of nanoparticles distributions (unimers or single chains). Interactions of methylaluminoxane (MAO) and MAO/metallocene compounds with PnAMA nanoparticles, lead to self-assembled micellar-like structures useful as “”nanoreactors”” for coordination polymerizations of ethylene. The inverse micellar-like structures of the three kinds of polymethacrylates, formed in the presence of MAO are confirmed by DLS experiments and by transmission electron microscopy using energy dispersive spectrometry analyzer, in dyed PnAMAs/MAO samples. The encapsulation of the metallocene catalyst into the PSMA/MAO nanoparticles reveals stable catalytic systems that have a clear effect on the morphol. of the polyethylenes synthesized through this method.

Superhydrophobic fabrics show great potential for use in functional gear, military clothing, and other applications; however, the introduction of toxicity and degraded wearing comfort restrict their applications. In this work, superhydrophobic fabrics with excellent wearing comfort have been prepared by coating of fluorine-free lauryl methacrylate (LMA) and subsequent crosslinking via radio-frequency capacitance coupled plasma (CCP). The treated cotton fabric demonstrated excellent superhydrophobicity and excellent wearing comfort. Due to the reactions between cotton and LMA and the crosslinking of LMA under plasma treatment, the LMA-coated cotton (cotton-g-LMA) fabric is durable enough to resist phys. rubbing (1500 cycles), washing (45 cycles), UV radiation ageing (48 h) and boiling water ageing (10 h). More importantly, the plasma treatment exerted little influence on the comfort of the cotton fabrics. Addnl., this method could be applied to various cellulose fabrics, e.g., cotton, ramie and viscose materials. The facile and scalable method presented here paves the way for the design of fluorine-free, comfortable and wearable superhydrophobic fabrics.

Macroporous monoliths represent now widely used materials whose successful application strongly depends on their characteristics. Among those the average pore size is one of the key parameters. In this paper, we consider the applicability of theor. calculations for the selection of appropriate porogens to generate the materials with required average pore size. A set of macroporous poly(meth)acrylate monoliths was synthesized via thermo- and photo-initiated free radical polymerization and characterized in regards to their average pore size. Addnl., the difference in solubility parameters as well as Hansen’s solubility parameter distance between monomers and porogens were calculated for each polymerization mixture using Hildebrand’s and Hansen’s solubility theories. The theor. predications and exptl. data were compared and analyzed to establish the applicability of theor. calculations to previse average pore size for different systems. It was found that Hildebrand’s theory seems to be poorly appropriate as universal tool, while Hansen’s theor. approach explained better the efficiency of solvents as porogens. The application of oligomers and polymer solutions due to the increase of viscosity as well as the variation of crosslinker amount in the monomer system can be singled out as Hansen’s theory limitations at the prediction of the average pore size.

Water-soluble polymers can be used as key ingredients of both drilling fluids for virgin fields and polymer-enhanced oil recovery in underperforming reservoirs. The efficacy of hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-polymer) as an agent for petroleum resource recovery was examined in this study. The hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-polymer) comprising acrylamide, sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate was synthesized in micellar medium by free-radical polymerization The hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-polymer) was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR spectral analyses. The effects of temperature, pH and shear on the solution behavior of the HAH-polymer were also examined Rheol. and fluid loss properties of HAH-polymer-incorporated water-based drilling fluids were assessed. The HAH-polymer improved the thermal stability between 25 and 160° of the drilling mud and maintained mud fluid loss of 8.4-8.6 cm3 compared with the polymer-free blank of 43.5-107.0 cm3. In a salt-contaminated mud, the heteropolymer enhanced rheol. properties and significantly reduced API filtration loss to 7.6-8.8 cm3 after hot aging between 25 and 150°. Under high temperature-high pressure filtration testing of muds, the HAH-polymer demonstrated excellent fluid loss reduction by providing about eightfold fluid loss control (14.7 cm3) compared to the polymer-free blank (113.2 cm3) at 150°.

A series of chem. products with characteristic groups in mol. structures were synthesized as novel flow improvers (FIs) for heavy asphaltenic crude oil. The rheol. measurement results showed that the FI-5 could behave the better performance in improving fluidity of heavy oil than FI-2 due to the former could form stronger hydrogen bonds with asphaltene in oil, which was confirmed through Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy of simulating studies. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) anal. results demonstrated that two products altered asphaltene structure at different degree through hydrogen bonding interaction, and the aggregation-dispersion effect of FIs on asphaltene were resp. obtained through scanning electron microscope (SEM), which beneficially weakened the stable structure of asphaltene in the heavy crude oil system. Hence, the mechanisms were tried to propose that could explain the phenomenon in rheol. measurement why FI-2 was not as good as FI-5 in improving fluidity of heavy oil. Results also indicated that the asphaltene content and aggregation structure in oils were vital parameters for its viscosity.

AIMS: To assess cardiac angiogenesis in type 2 diabetes by positron emission tomography (PET) tracer [68 Ga]Ga-NODAGA-E[(cRGDyK)]2 (68 Ga-RGD) imaging. METHODS: Cross-sectional study including 20 persons with type 2 diabetes and 10 non-diabetic controls (CONs). Primary prespecified outcome was difference in cardiac angiogenesis (cardiac 68 Ga-RGD mean target-to-background ratio [TBRmean ]) between type 2 diabetes and CONs. Secondary outcome was to investigate associations between cardiac angiogenesis and kidney function and other risk factors. RESULTS: Participants with type 2 diabetes had a mean ± SD age of 61 ± 9 years, 30% were women, median (IQR) diabetes duration of 11 (6-19) years and 3 (15%) had a history of cardiovascular disease. The CONs had comparable age and sex distribution to the participants with type 2 diabetes, and none had a history of coronary artery disease. Myocardial flow reserve was lower in type 2 diabetes (2.7 ± 0.6) compared with CONs (3.4 ± 1.2) ( p  = 0.03) and coronary artery calcium score was higher (562 [142-905] vs. 1 [0-150] p  = 0.04). Cardiac 68 Ga-RGD TBRmean was similar in participants with type 2 diabetes (0.89 ± 0.09) and CONs (0.89 ± 0.10) ( p  = 0.92). Cardiac 68 Ga-RGD TBRmean was not associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate, urine albumin creatinine ratio, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery calcium score or baroreflex sensitivity, neither in pooled analyses nor in type 2 diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac angiogenesis, evaluated with 68 Ga-RGD PET, was similar in type 2 diabetes and CONs. Cardiac angiogenesis was not associated with kidney function or other risk markers in pooled analyses or in analyses restricted to type 2 diabetes.
