Our investigation provides compelling evidence that the SiO2NPs-V-PDMA obtained from EB modification and the developed coating formula for roller-based coating process are realistic approaches for hydrophobic/superhydrophobic coatings and printing inks for paper-based industries. This paper discusses the influence of the structure of copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate and alkyl methacrylates with C6-C18 hydrocarbon side groups on the wettability and sorption properties of surface-modified chitosan aerogels. The grafting of copolymers onto the surface of aerogels was confirmed by elemental anal., XPS, and Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy. As a result of the modification, with an increase in the amount of the hydrocarbon substituent alkyl methacrylate, the surface of the resulting materials became hydrophobic with contact angles in the range of 146-157°. At the same time, the water absorption of the aerogels decreased by a factor of 30 compared to that for unmodified aerogels, while the sorption capacity for light oil, diesel fuel, and synthetic motor oil remained at the level of more than 30 g/g. Chitosan aerogels with grafted copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate and alkyl methacrylates retain biodegradation capacity; however, compared to unmodified chitosan, this process has an induction period.

With this simple approach, optical power efficiencies (OPE) of 3.8% and 3.6% and optical quantum efficiencies (OQE) of 24.1% and 27.4% are obtained, which are among the highest values yet reported.

The oligomers had excellent thermostability, just losing 5.9% at 288°. Owing to the spatial restraints between hydrophilic and oleophilic chains in interpenetrating heteronetworks, the COHGs exhibited significantly low-swellable behavior whether in water or in oil, beneficial to durable applications without impairment of intrinsic performances. The amphiphilic heteronetworks could experience structure rearrangement in response to the surrounding solvents (water or hexadecane), leading to switchable surface wettability. Moreover, the COHGs possess strong wet adhesion to various organic and inorganic surfaces due to synergetic interactions existing at the interface between COHGs and operational substrates, including the hydrophobic effect, electrostatic interaction, and nonswelling behavior, which greatly avoid tedious operation processes during practical application. As for the relationships between the structure and antifouling performances, the elastic surfaces combined with amphiphilic and zwitterionic features reveal remarkable fouling resistance (Navicula sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) and recyclable utilization. The COHGs may provide an approach to develop high-performance and ecofriendly antifouling materials.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are building blocks of emerging interest for fabrication of polymeric nanocomposite materials with a range of potential applications. In the present work, we have conducted a detailed investigation into the use of carboxylated GQDs as surfactants in aqueous miniemulsion polymerization The cGQDs were prepared by carbonization of dextrose according to a bottom-up hydrothermal approach. It is demonstrated that cGQDs can satisfactorily stabilize miniemulsions of a variety of vinyl monomers including styrene, acrylates and methacrylates. The nature of the initiation system plays a pivotal role in regards to monomer conversion – the water soluble initiator 2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane]dihydrochloride (VA-044) resulted in substantially higher conversions than the oil soluble initiator azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The present results illustrate that these cGQDs have the ability to function as surfactants in miniemulsion polymerization for various vinyl monomer types, which has implications for hybrid nanocomposite nanoparticles and materials synthesis.

The electro-optical characteristics of nanoparticles-doped polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have been investigated for display applications. The PDLC samples were obtained by polymerization induced phase separation of the nematic liquid crystal LC-nanoparticles-prepolymer mixtures under UV illumination with a constant intensity. The effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles doping on the PDLC system was studied. It was seen that the electro-optical characteristics of PDLC were dependent on the amount of Al2O3 nanoparticles used. The effect of morphol. on the electro-optical properties was examined, and the exptl. results indicated that the driving voltage was affected considerably by the amount of Al2O3 nanoparticles. The results showed that the nanoparticles concentration can be optimized to obtain promising electronic materials with a min. threshold for display applications.

Radical ring-opening copolymerization-induced self-assembly (rROPISA) was performed by copolymerizing benzyl methacrylate and cyclic ketene acetals (CKA), such as 2-methylene-4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane or 5,6-benzo-2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane, in heptane at 90 °C by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from a poly(lauryl methacrylate) macro-RAFT agent. The chain lengths of both the solvophilic macro-RAFT agent and the solvophobic block, together with the initial amount of CKA, were independently varied to achieve various compositions The amount of CKA in the copolymers ranged from 4 to �0 mol % by adjusting the monomer stoichiometry, leading to nearly complete degradation for CKA contents above �5 mol %. rROPISA led to stable nanoparticles in all cases, ranging from 40 to 500 nm in diameter, depending on the exptl. conditions, as assessed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Low average diameters and very narrow particle size distributions were obtained for CKA contents below 20 mol %, except for a targeted solvophobic chain length of 300 that gave narrow particle size distributions up to 50 mol % in CKA. Morphol. investigation revealed the formation of spheres for all copolymer compositions, which was assigned to both the nature of the RAFT agent used and insertion of CKA in the solvophobic block, which prevent the formation of other morphologies.
