To determine the mech. properties of a newly-developed CAD/CAM resin composite block and compare with other resin composite blocks and a polymer-infiltrated ceramic block.Exptl. composite block was formulated by our proprietary resin and filler technologies and cured via Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP). Bar-shaped specimens (1 x 4×12 – 13 mm, n = 10) for flexural strength, flexural modulus and modulus of resilience were sectioned from block materials and measured in accordance to modified ISO-6872. Cylinder specimens for compressive strength (2 x 4 mm, n = 8) and for diametral tensile strength (6 x 3 mm, n = 8) were milled from the block materials and tested according to ASTM-D695 and ANSI/ADA-Specification #27, resp. Block specimens (5 mm, n = 3) for Vickers hardness were polished and measured for five indentations on each specimen. The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests (p â‰?.05).Exptl. composite block showed higher or significantly higher flexural strength, flexural modulus, modulus of resilience, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and Vickers hardness than the other com. available block materials except Vita Enamic for flexural modulus and hardness and Cerasmart for modulus of resilience. Some pos. correlations were observed among the different mech. properties.New composite block exhibited higher mech. properties as compared to com. available composite block materials. Superior mech. properties for resin composite block materials were obtained by composite and curing processing technologies. Resin composite blocks with higher mech. properties are good options for the fabrication of CAD/CAM indirect restorations.

The compatibilization of immiscible polystyrene/polypropylene (PS/PP) blends with virgin graphene oxide (GO-V) and GO modified with a bottlebrush reactive copolymer layer (GO-P) is reported. This practically important blend was chosen since, currently, PS and PP are recycled to a very low degree. The amphiphilic bottlebrush copolymer synthesized by us contained hydrophobic and hydrophilic side chains and was attached to the GO nanosheets via epoxy functionality. The GO modification and the introduction of GO into the blend were conducted from water. Thus, the introduction of the compatibilizing nanomaterial can be conducted during the mech. recycling washing stage in a real-world situation. The final blend was prepared via melt mixing using an extruder. We examined the influence of GO modification and the mixing order on the blends’ morphol., rheol., and mech. properties. Thermodn. calculations predicted a higher interfacial activity of GO nanosheets in PS/PP/GO-P blends than that in PS/PP/GO-V blends. The morphol. and rheol. study assessed this prediction. It was demonstrated that the bottlebrush-modified GO-P sheets were readily driven to the PS/PP interphase. The mech. measurements showed enhanced mech. properties for PS/PP/GO-P blends, especially for those in which GO was first premixed with PS.

Ionic liquids (ILs) hydrogels as an appropriate candidate for the absorption of nanoparticles, had gained immense interests due to its friendly environment, low cost, high efficiency, and insensitivity to toxic substance. However, conventional ILs hydrogels usually suffered from easy brittle property and mech. defects. Herein, a novel entrapped pattern and structural transformation of ILs within copolymer of acrylamide/N, N dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate bromododecane hydrophobic monomers p(AM/DMLB) based hydrogels were prepared through changing the filling pattern of ILs to form toughened hydrophobic association hydrogels. After adding the ionic liquids latex sphere particles (ILs-LPs), both the ionically crosslinked network and hydrophobic association network were fabricated, which could effectively reconstruct the structure and dissipate energy. It was found that the p(AM/DMLB)/ILs-LPs hydrogels possessed high mech. properties, and the tensile strength, elongation and toughness reached 0.49 MPa, 2300% and 4.9 MJ/m3, resp. Without adding other additives and crosslinking agents, the hydrogel could act as the template for the in situ and stability of Pd nanoparticles. More importantly, the excellent biocompatibility, remoldability and fatigue resistance endowing the p(AM/DMLB)/ILs-LPs hydrogels/Pd with recycled and reused performances, which was possible to bestow samples with any desired shape and even served as catalysts for promising practical application. Therefore, the innovative design strategy for ionic liquids’ latex sphere particles as the sole joint-center of dual phys. crosslinked network, could be used to develop robust and stretchable hydrogel materials for catalytic use in the sewage disposal industry.

Achieving cellular internalization and endosomal escape remains a major challenge for many antitumor therapeutics, especially macromol. drugs. Viral drug carriers are reported for efficient intracellular delivery, but with limited choices of payloads. In this study, a novel polymeric nanoparticle (ADMAP) is developed, resembling the structure and functional features of a virus. ADMAP is synthesized by grafting endosomolytic poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) on acetalated dextran. The endosomolytic polymer mimics the capsid protein for endosomal escape, and acetalated dextran resembles the viral core for accommodating payloads. After polymer synthesis, the subsequent controlled nanopptn. on a microfluidic device yields uniform nanoparticles with high encapsulation efficiency. At late endosomal pH (5.0), the ADMAP particles successfully destabilize endosomal membranes and release the drug payloads synergistically, resulting in a greater therapeutic efficacy compared with that of free anticancer drugs. Further conjugation of a tumor-penetrating peptide enhances the antitumor efficacy toward 3D spheroids and finally leads to spheroid disintegration. The unique structure along with the synergistic endosomal escape and drug release make ADMAP nanoparticles favorable for intracellular delivery of antitumor therapeutics.

The great challenge facing additive manufacturing is that the available high-performance 3D printing materials can hardly keep up with the rapid development of new additive manufacturing technol. Then, the com. resins available in the market have some problems, such as poor thermal stability, insufficient light-curing degree, and large shrinkage after curing, which need to be solved urgently. This study reports a photocurable polyimide ink for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing to prepare controllable 3D structures with high thermal stability, low shrinkage, and excellent comprehensive properties. In this study, pyromellitic dianhydride and diaminodiphenyl ether, the Kapton polyimide with the highest performance synthesized so far, were selected as raw materials, and 2,2′-bis(3,4-dicarboxylic acid)hexafluoropropane dianhydride containing fluorine was introduced to modify the branched-chain structure. The polyimide was prepared by one-step imidization, and then the graft with photocurable double bonds and certain functions was grafted by reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with phenolic hydroxyl groups. In this work, the solubility of the synthesized oligomer polyimide in organic solvents was greatly increased by combining three methods. Thereby allowing the formation of ink for photocuring 3D printing, and the ink can be stacked to form low-shrinkage polyimide with complex controllable shape. Polyimide printed by DLP can produce complex structures with good mech. character and thermal stability and small shrinkage. Therefore, the polyimide prepared in this study is considered to be of great com. resins. In addition, due to its properties, it has important development potential in some fields with high demand for thermal stability, such as high-temperature cooling valves, aerospace, and other fields.

Radical ring opening polymerization (rROP) of cyclic ketenes such as 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDO) is a promising method for introducing (bio)degradability to the backbone of chain-growth polymers. However, the copolymerization of MDO with other vinyl monomers is challenging due to its low propagation rate and unfavorable reactivity ratios. In this work, the bulk copolymerization of MDO with vinyl acetate (VAc) is revisited and accurate reactivity ratios are calculated (rMDO = 0.43 ± 0.06 and rVAc = 3.25 ± 0.12). Furthermore, for the first time the copolymerizations of MDO with 2-octyl acrylate (2OA) as well as lauryl methacrylate (LMA) are analyzed, and the reactivity ratios of MDO and these hydrophobic (meth)acrylate monomers are assessed. The lowest composition drift was measured for the MDO/2OA system with estimated reactivity ratios of rMDO = 0.0000 + 0.0003 and r2OA = 1.29 ± 0.053. A higher composition drift was observed for the MDO/VAc system, for which reactivity ratios have been estimated The MDO/LMA system presented the highest composition drift with estimated reactivity ratios of rMDO = 0.022 ± 0.002 and rLMA = 8.471 ± 0.028.

In order to obtain stable superhydrophobicity, suitable hydrophobic treatment agents should be selected according to different material properties. In this paper, cotton and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were resp. coated with dodecyl methacrylate (LMA) via argon combined capacitively coupled plasma (CCP), and the surface hydrophobicity and durability of the treated cotton and polyester fabrics are also discussed. An interesting phenomenon happened, whereby the LMA-coated cotton fabric (Cotton- g-LMA) had better water repelling and mech. durability properties than LMA-coated PET fabric (PET- g-LMA), and LMA-coated hydroxyl-grafted PET fabrics (PET fabrics were successively coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and LMA, PET- g-PEG & LMA) had a similar performance to cotton fabrics. The water contact angles of Cotton- g-LMA, PET- g-LMA and PET- g-PEG & LMA were 156 °, 153 ° and 155 °, resp., and after 45 washing cycles or 1000 rubbing cycles, the corresponding water contact angles decreased to 145 °, 88 °, 134 ° and 146 °, 127 ° and 143 °, resp. Addnl., thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyamides-6 (PA6) fabrics all exhibited the same properties as the PET fabric. Therefore, the grafting of hydroxyl can improve the hydrophobic effect of LMA coating and the binding property between LMA and fabrics effectively, without changing the wearing comfort.

Conventional fabrication processes of such coatings typically require fluorinated components, toxic solvents, and elevated temperatures, and therefore contribute to environmental pollution. Here, we present a dispersion-based, fluorine-free coating system that produces highly repellent surface coatings at ambient conditions. Our system is based on aqueous dispersions of a polymeric binder and hydrophobic fumed silica particles, which upon drying self-organize into a micro- and nanostructured thin film with superhydrophobic properties, characterized by a water contact angle above 150° and a contact angle hysteresis below 10°. An addnl. dispersion-based coating step allows infusing these structures with silicone oil, thus producing a lubricant-infused repellent coating mimicking the pitcher plant. Water droplets on such coatings exhibit efficient repellency properties, characterized by low sliding angles (<5°) and contact angle hysteresis of water droplets (<10°). Our method provides a versatile, dispersion-based toolbox to create functional, repellent coatings in a simple, scalable and environmentally benign process. Mech. vibration energy-driven self-assembly of microplatelets at the water-air interface of inverted water droplets is demonstrated, and the real-time formation process of the patterned structure is dynamically explored. 40 kHz ultrasonic wave is transferred into microplatelets suspended in a water environment to drive the self-assembly of predesigned well-ordered structures. Two-dimensional self-assembly of microplatelets inside the water phase with a large patterned area is achieved. Stable three-dimensional multi-layered self-assembled structures are quickly formed at the air-water interface. These demonstrations aim to open distinctive and effective ways for new two-dimensional surface coating technol. with autonomous organization strategy, and three-dimensional complex hierarchical architectures built by the bottom-up method and commonly found in nature (such as nacre, bone or enamel, etc.).
