Notably, the self-healing property of PLHA gels could be achieved easily by the hereinafter three factors: hydrophobic association, LAPONITE and PDA. Compared with the pristine hydrophobic associated (HA) gel, excellent dye adsorption capacity toward both anionic and cationic dyes came out in PLHA gels owing to the neg. charges on LAPONITE and abundant functional groups on PDA nanoparticles such as amine groups, catechol groups and aromatic moieties. The PLHA gels could bind organic dyes via various ways, including coordination, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding or π-π stacking interaction. Compared with the reported works, our proposed method provided the opportunity to prepare a novel robust, self-healing phys. dual cross-linked hydrogels, which have the potential to be applied in tissue engineering and the reusable adsorbents of organic colorants.

Herein, an anisotropic organohydogel actuator made up of rGO-doped hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) network and hydrophobic poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) network is prepared via a two-step interpenetrating method. Bearing fluorescent monomer N-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)acrylamide (ATPE) as well as fluorescent ligand 6-acrylamidopicolinic acid (6APA), the PLMA network shows fluorescent changes in color or brightness depending on the presence or absence of Eu3+ ions in response to heat/NIR. In a word, the proposed organohydrogel actuator, which exhibits simultaneous fluorescence color variation and fast morphing in response to one stimulus, provides insights in designing and fabricating novel soft robots.

Chitosan is a promising polymer from natural polysaccharides, which is an environmentally friendly compound from renewable raw materials. Chitosan has biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial and other activities. In this article, we report the biodegradation control of chitosan materials by use of random copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate and (fluoro)alkyl methacrylates as surface modifiers. We show that grafting of copolymers allows increasing the hydrophobicity of chitosan materials with initial contact angles up to 114° from 89° for films and up to 154° from 123° for aerogels. We demonstrate that modified aerogels retain contact angles of more than 150° for a long contact time with water while the initial aerogel fully wets for 30 s. The resulting chitosan aerogels have high porosity with a pore size of 100-200 μm, and the pore walls are 0.6-0.7-μm-thick film formations. Our study of lyophilic properties of modified chitosan substrates showed a change in the hydrophobicity of the materials as a function of length of the hydrocarbon radical in the side groups of the (fluoro)alkyl methacrylates in the copolymers. We demonstrate that the rate of biodegradation of the resulting materials decreases with an increase in the number of hydrophobic groups in the modifier. The obtained chitosan materials with hydrophobic coatings have potential as a protective layer for wound dressings with an extended service life.

Crystallinity of bottlebrush polymers due to side chain crystallization has been considered to be related to the length of the side chains only under the assumption of complete participation of crystallization by all side chains. Recent exptl. results revealed that in poly(n-alkyl methacrylate)s a fraction of side chains could not crystallize due to constraints imposed by the trapped main chain entanglements and required expansion of main chain-main chain distance. This result renders the original simplified consideration of the origin of crystallinity in bottlebrush polymers questionable. In this work, we introduce a new parameter fc, the fraction of crystallizable side chains, to better describe the crystallinity of bottlebrush polymers. A linear relationship between the melting enthalpy and the number of alkyl groups in side chains for bottlebrush polymers reported repeatedly indicates that fc remains essentially unchanged when bottlebrush polymers had the same main chain structure and grafting degree but different side chain lengths. The slope of the above-mentioned linear relationship is thus ΔHCH2 × fc, where ΔHCH2 stands for the melting enthalpy of one mole alkyl group packed into the crystal. With a known value of fc, it is possible to estimate the value of ΔHCH2. In case of poly(n-alkyl methacrylate)s, we estimated ΔHCH2 of hexagonal crystal being at most 5.74 kJ/mol with the knowledge of possibly smallest fc of 0.67 obtained from small angle X-ray scattering data. Therefore, the crystallinity of bottlebrush polymer would be calculated based on the equation Xc = fc × (Nc/N) with N and Nc being the number of alkyl groups in a side chain and those packed in the crystalline structure, resp. Both chem. structure and grafting degree of bottlebrush polymers affect fc.

Herein, we design a hybrid organohydrogel evaporator to achieve the enduring oil contamination repulsion with maintaining accelerated evaporation process, and integrate capacities of ultra-stable floating, hindered salt-crystallization, large-scale fabrication for practical purification of seawater and polluted solutions The raised water surface surrounding evaporators, induced by low d. of organogel-phase, results in oil contamination resistance through the lateral capillary repulsion effect. Meanwhile, the organogel-phase containing photo-thermal carbon-nanotubes with low thermal capacity and conduction can form locally confined hot dots under solar irradiation and reduce heat dissipation on heating excessive water. Therefore, based on this approach, accelerated long-term practical purification of oil-contaminated solutions without any extra disposal is realized. Considering other properties of ultra-stable floating, large-scale fabrication, and anti-salt crystallization, these innovative organohydrogel evaporators open pathways for purifying oil-slick-polluted water via interfacial evaporation and are anticipated accelerating industrialization of efficient and sustainable solar-driven water purification

Micellar aggregates and thermoresponsive gelation of amphiphilic random copolymers in water were examined in detail, focused on effects of the d.p. (DP) on the behavior. For this purpose, we designed random copolymers carrying hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) and hydrophobic dodecyl groups, where the DP was varied from 63 to 358. The content of the hydrophobic monomer was set to 60 mol% to facilitate thermogelation. All the copolymers formed multichain aggregates in water, while the size distribution depended on DP. Since copolymers with larger DP had less composition distribution, the copolymers with 145 or more of DP formed size-controlled aggregates in water. Their concentrated solutions, above the overlap concentration of the aggregates, gelled entirely upon heating, followed by syneresis. In contrast, the short copolymer with 63 of DP formed aggregates with multimodal size distribution, and the concentrated solution underwent macroscopic phase separation upon heating, followed by gelation of the polymer-rich lower layer. As confirmed by small-angle neutron scattering, the copolymer suitable for thermogelation originally formed aggregates consisting of multiple micelle subunits in the aqueous dilute solution, and the thermogelation of the concentrated solution was driven by the phys. packing of the micelle subunits upon heating. Thus, we revealed that the DP hierarchically affected not only the self-assembly of the copolymers into size-controlled micellar aggregates in water but also the thermogelation of the concentrated solutions via intermicellar association

Hydrogels and organogels, as two crucial representatives of soft materials, have attracted immense interest. However, they develop independently along two parallel lines, and these gels with single networks have their inherent drawbacks. For example, hydrogels tend to freeze, and organogels are usually brittle. Herein, organogels were incorporated into a hydrogel matrix for the synthesis of organohydrogels GOHs through polymerization in Pickering emulsion. The rigid organogel domains contribute to enhancing the strength of organohydrogels. Besides this, the organogels derived from 12-HAS self-assembly behavior exhibit a gel-sol transition when the temperature reaches 70°C, thus leading to a thermo-softening behavior in the GOHs. Due to the phase transition of organogel domains and the elastic hydrogel network, the resultant organohydrogels demonstrate high-strain shape-memory performance (over 1000%) which could help achieve full recovery in seconds. Consequently, GOHs are endowed with the potential of practical application in soft robots, wearable devices, and biol. materials.

Then, the possible allelochems. in the fresh root and rhizosphere soil of celery were extracted with acetone, separated and purified by chromatog. four times and cocultured with Foc in vitro. Three organosulfur compounds, namely, thioglycolic acid, propanethiol and iso-Pr isothiocyanate, were identified from the chromatog. fractions, with the highest inhibition on Foc in the fourth chromatog. by gas chromatog./mass spectrometry. All these compounds exhibited inhibitory effects on Foc, but thioglycolic acid showed stronger inhibition than the other two compounds and completely inhibited the growth of Foc colonies at concentrations of 50-100μmol L-1.
