Sustainable valorization of paper mill sludge into cellulose nanofibrils and cellulose nanopaper

As a kind of agro-industrial wastes, paper mill sludge (PMS) has posed serious environmental and economic challenges for disposal due to the more stringent regulations and diminishing land availability in recent years. The present study is aimed at providing a sustainable approach to efficiently convert PMS to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanopaper (CNP) by formic acid (FA) hydrolysis pretreatment and the followed micro fluidization. It is found that FA hydrolysis (4-6 h) could swell and shorten PMS fibers, and only two-pass microfluidization is sufficient to get uniform CNFs from the collected cellulose residual. Results indicate that the obtained CNFs show high thermal stability and crystallinity index, surface functionality (ester groups), as well as a high yield of over 75 wt.%. Notably, more than 90 % FA can be recovered and the hydrolyzed sugars could be potentially used to produce platform chemicals (e.g. lactic acid, furfural). Finally, transparent CNP is prepared from the CNFs suspension via a simple vacuum filtration technique. The resultant CNP shows good mechanical properties with the maximum tensile strength and toughness of 106.4 MPa and 6.62 MJ/m(3), respectively. Therefore, the current work provides a green and sustainable method to valorize PMS for the production of valuable CNFs and CNP.

Modelling of biodiesel blend using optimised deep belief network: blending waste cooking oil methyl ester with tyre pyrolysis oil

The optimal selection is carried out by introducing a new algorithm named lioness updated crow search algorithm (LCSA), which hybrids the concept of the lion algorithm (LA) and crow search algorithm (CSA). Finally, the proposed work is analysed and compared over other conventional models with respect to emission analysis and error analysis. From the analysis, the proposed model in terms of mean deviation (MD) measure has gained betterment and is 75.57, 17.71, 85.55, and 74.19% better than grey wolf optimiser (GWO), whale optimisation algorithm (WOA), LA, and CSA, respectively. For the mean absolute error measure, the implemented model is 42.38, 24.42, 43.53 and 36.72% improved than GWO, WOA, LA, and CSA, respectively.

Production of methyl esters from waste cooking oil and chicken fat oil via simultaneous esterification and transesterification using acid catalyst

Low cost and environment friendly sulfonated carbon catalyst was prepared from glycerol and concentrated sulfuric acid via in situ carbonization and sulfonation. By using WCO, the highest FAME yield achieved was 92.3% at an optimum conditions of 5 wt% catalyst loading with 22:1 methanol to WCO molar ratio and 100 degrees C reaction temperature for 3 h. The SCG catalyst also maintained FAME yield >90% for two consecutive cycle for reusability. Meanwhile, using CFO, the highest FAME yield obtained was 90.8% at an optimised condition of 5 wt% catalyst loading with 18:1 methanol to CFO molar ratio and 70 degrees C reaction temperature for 1 h. Characterization of the Volatile Components of Essential Oils of Selected Plants in Kenya

Essential oils are secondary metabolites that plants produce for protection from pests and predators, attraction of pollinators, and seed dispersal. The oils are made up of a mixture of compounds that give a characteristic flavour and odour. Currently, essential oils are receiving great attention in research for their phytochemical and antimicrobial activities. However, there is scanty information on the chemical composition of many plants. This study provides a detailed analysis of the chemical composition of essential oils of ginger, garlic, tick berry, and Mexican marigold in Kenya. The essential oils were extracted by steam distillation and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The study identified a total of 52 different chemical classes from the essential oils of the four different plants that were analysed. Their percentage composition was also found to vary between the test plants. The essential oils of Mexican marigold constituted the highest composition of the identified chemical classes at 71.2%, followed by ginger at 55.8%, while both tick berry and garlic oils constituted 53.8% of the total classes identified. Terpenes constituted the highest composition in the essential oils of all the four test plants. Other major chemical classes included esters, ketones, organosulfurs, alkanes, cycloalkanes, steroids, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkanols. Some of these chemical compounds have been shown to have a huge utility potential in biopesticides, pharmaceutical, and food industries, and hence, their industrial extraction and purification from the essential oils of these plants are recommended.

Chinese rice wine (CRW) is a popular fermented product in China, with complicated microbial composition and flavour compounds. Moreover, functional network analysis provided insights into the biological correlations between microbial species and metabolic pathways, that is, Lactobacillus genus had negative effects on metabolic activities. This study expands the idea of improving the quality of CRW by controlling the microbiome.

In this regard, polymer chemistries, like ester or carbonate linkages, which are closer to equilibrium are very promising but to use these materials requires improvements to their properties and methods of manufacture. Here, efficient polymerization catalyses are used to transform wastes and bio-sourced monomers into thermoplastics which combine high elasticity and strength and which can be degraded to allow for some chemical recycling. The plastics are prepared from carbon dioxide, limonene oxide (from waste citrus fruit peel) and epsilon-decalactone (from triglycerides). These monomers are polymerized, using catalyzed controlled polymerizations with high conversion efficiencies, to selectively form ABA block polymers (A = high T-g polycarbonate, B = low T-g polyester). The series of 5 poly(limonene carbonate)-b-poly(epsilon-decalactone)-b-poly(limonene carbonate) (PLC-PDL-PLC) samples allow for systematic variations in the overall molar masses (M-n = 50-100 kg mol(-1)) and hard-block compositions (21-63 wt% PLC). All the polymers are fully characterized using a range of spectroscopies, gel permeation chromatography, thermal and tensile mechanical measurements. The leading plastic combines tensile strength (stress at break, sigma(b) = 21.2 MPa, Young’s Modulus, E-y = 321 MPa) and high elasticity (elongation at break, epsilon(b) = 400%) – an enhancement of more than 20x in elongation at break and tensile toughness over poly(limonene carbonate), overcoming the well-known brittleness and processing limitations of PLC. Discrimination of botanical origin of olive oil from selected Greek cultivars by SPME-GC-MS and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

BACKGROUND Consumers today wish to know the botanical origin of the olive oil they purchase. The objective of the present study was the development of robust chemometric models based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) for the purpose of botanical differentiation of three commercial Greek olive oil cultivars. RESULTS Using the solid-phase microextraction technique (SPME), volatile compounds (VC) were obtained and analyzed by GC-MS. Five hydrocarbons and one ester were selected by the forward stepwise algorithm, which best discriminated the olive oil samples. From ATR-FTIR analysis, the spectral regions chosen from the forward stepwise algorithm were associated with C(sic)O stretching vibration of the esters of triglycerides and the C-H bending vibrations of the CH2 aliphatic group and double bonds. Application of the supervised methods of linear and quadratic discriminant cross-validation analysis, based on VC data, provided a correct classification score of 97.4% and 100.0%, respectively. Corresponding statistical analyses were used in the mid-infrared spectra, by which 96.1% of samples were discriminated correctly. CONCLUSION ATR-FTIR and SPME-GC-MS techniques in conjunction with the appropriate feature selection algorithm and classification methods proved to be powerful tools for the authentication of Greek olive oil. Derivatives of nitrogen mustard anticancer agents with improved cytotoxicity

In previous studies, we demonstrated that esters of bendamustine containing a basic moiety are far more cytotoxic anticancer agents than their parent compound and that the substitution of the labile ester moiety by a branched ester or an amide markedly increases stability in the blood plasma. In the current study, we showed that this substitution was bioisosteric. Aiming at increased cytotoxicity, we introduced the same modification to related nitrogen mustards: 6-isobendamustine, chlorambucil, and melphalan. The synthesis was accomplished using the coupling reagents N,N ‘-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide or 2-(1H-benzotriazole-1-yl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethylaminium tetrafluoroborate. Cytotoxicity against a panel of diverse cancer cells (carcinoma, sarcoma, and malignant melanoma) was assessed in a kinetic chemosensitivity assay. The target compounds showed cytotoxic or cytocidal effects at concentrations above 1 mu M: a striking enhancement over bendamustine and 6-isobendamustine, both ineffective against the selected cancer cells at concentrations up to 50 mu M, and a considerable improvement over chlorambucil, showing some potency only against the sarcoma cells. Melphalan was almost as effective as the target compounds-derivatization only provided a small improvement.
