Hydroxy- and alkoxycarbonylation reactions constitute important industrial processes in homogeneous catalysis. Nowadays, palladium complexes constitute state-of-the-art catalysts for these transformations. Herein, we report the first efficient platinum-catalysed alkoxycarbonylations of olefins including sterically hindered and functionalized ones. This atom-efficient catalytic transformation provides straightforward access to a variety of valuable esters in good to excellent yields and often with high selectivities. In kinetic experiments the activities of Pd- and Pt-based catalysts were compared. Even at low catalyst loading, Pt shows high catalytic activity.

Temnadenia odorifera is an endemic species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. This study was developed in order to identify the volatile compounds emitted by the living flowers and nectar, to evaluate the temporal pattern of scent emission, and the sugars composition of its nectar. Analyses of the flower scent by dynamic headspace in vivo, of nectar sugar composition and studies on floral biology were performed. Twenty-three volatile compounds were identified in the flowers scent. The total amount of odor emitted by flowers varied significantly throughout anthesis, ranging from 10232.7 ng g(-1) (9 to 12 h) to 620.2 ng g(-1) (15 to 18 h). 2-Phenylethanol and (E)-cinnamyl alcohol were the major compounds. Concentration ratio between disaccharides and the sum of hexoses ranged from 2.3 to 3.04, which can be correlated to the physiological needs inherent to big bees, the most frequent insects in T. odorifera. Analysis of the chemical composition of T. odorifera flowers provided a broader understanding of the mechanisms responsible for plant-insect interactions.

This heterogenized Celite center dot PANI center dot Pd system, is used as an efficient catalyst for chemoselective hydrogenation reactions. The catalyst is characterized by usual spectral, analytical techniques and studied for hydrogenation reactions at ambient conditions. The mild reaction conditions allow the control over the reactions and excellent selectivity is achieved in number of conversions. Hydrogenation of a carbon-carbon double bond was favored over other polar pi-bond systems, while labile functional groups such as benzyl ether, benzyl esters, cyano, nitro and halogen remained unaffected. Primary amines were converted to N,N-dimethyl amines with formaldehyde, the double bond of coumarin was selectively hydrogenated without opening of the lactone functionality.

Unactivated alkyl chlorides are abundant building blocks in organic synthesis, but they have been rarely engaged in cross-electrophile coupling. Herein, we report a Ni/Ti-cocatalyzed reductive allylic defluorinative cross -coupling between trifluoromethyl alkenes and unactivated alkyl chlorides and bromides, enabling the efficient preparation of diverse functional-group-rich gem-difluoroalkenes. Notably, synthesis of the gem-difluoroalkene analogues of azaperone, haloperidol, and benperidol was also accomplished using our method as a key step.

The selective reduction of esters to aldehydes,viathe formation of stable alkyl silyl acetals, was, for the first time, achieved with both manganese, -Mn-2(CO)(10)- and rhenium -Re-2(CO)(10)- catalysts in the presence of triethylsilane as reductant. These two methods provide a direct access to a large variety of aliphatic and aromatic alkyl silyl acetals (30 examples) and to the corresponding aldehydes (13 examples) upon hydrolysis. The reactions proceeded in excellent yields and high selectivity at room temperature under photo-irradiation conditions (LED, 365 nm, 40 W, 9 h).

N-Acylpyrrole-type amides are a class of versatile building blocks in asymmetric synthesis. We report that by employing Ni(COD)(2)/2,2 ‘-bipyridine (5 mol%) catalytic system, the direct, catalytic alcoholysis of N-acylpyrrole-type aromatic and aliphatic amides with both primary and secondary alcohols can be achieved efficiently under very mild conditions (rt, 1 h) even at gram scale. By increasing the catalyst loading to 10 mol%, prolonging reaction time (18 h), and/or elevating reaction temperature to 50 degrees C/80 degrees C, the reaction could be extended to both complex and hindered N-acylpyrroles as well as to N-acylpyrazoles, Nacylindoles, and to other (functionalized) primary and secondary alcohols. In all cases, only 1.5 equiv. of alcohol were used. The value of the method has been demonstrated by the racemization-free, catalytic alcoholysis of chiral amides yielded from other asymmetric methodologies.
