Chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction (chemobrain) is one of the major complaints for cancer patients treated with chemotherapy such as Doxorubicin (DOX). The induction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation were identified as major contributors to such adverse effect. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a natural polyphenolic compound, that exhibits unique context-dependent antioxidant activity. It exhibits pro-oxidant effects in cancer cells, while it is a potent antioxidant and cytoprotective in normal cells. The present study was designed to investigate the potential neuroprotective effects of CAPE against DOX-induced cognitive impairment. Chemobrain was induced in Sprague Dawley rats via systemic DOX administration once per week for 4 weeks (2 mg/kg/week, i.p.). CAPE was administered at 10 or 20 mu mol/kg/day, i.p., 5 days per week for 4 weeks. Morris water maze (MWM) and passive avoidance tests were used to assess learning and memory functions. Oxidative stress was evaluated via the colorimetric determination of GSH and MDA levels in both hippocampal and prefrontal cortex brain regions. However, inflammatory markers, acetylcholine levels, and neuronal cell apoptosis were assessed in the same brain areas using immunoassays including either ELISA, western blotting or immunohistochemistry. DOX produced significant impairment in learning and memory as indicated by the data generated from MWM and step-through passive avoidance tests. Additionally DOXtriggered oxidative stress as evidenced from the reduction in GSH levels and increased lipid peroxidation. Treatment with DOX resulted in neuroinflammation as indicated by the increase in NF-kB (p65) nuclear translocation in addition to boosting the levels of pro-inflammatory mediators (COX-II/TNF-alpha) along with the increased levels of glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) in the tested tissues. Moreover, DOX reduced acetylcholine levels and augmented neuronal cell apoptosis as supported by the increased active caspase-3 levels. Co-treatment with CAPE significantly counteracted DOX-induced behavioral and molecular abnormalities in rat brain tissues. Our results provide the first preclinical evidence for CAPE promising neuroprotective activity against DOXinduced neurodegeneration and memory deficits.

This is apparent from the X-ray crystallographically determined internuclear distance between the sulphur and ketone (C=O) oxygen atoms (2.71-2.85 angstrom), which is significantly less than the sum of their van der Waals radii (3.25-3.30 angstrom). The substitution on the S atom is oriented diametrically away from the ketone O atom to maximize the interaction between them. The trend is also seen in the 1,4-S…O contact between the S and furan O atoms (2.70 angstrom) in the gamma-butyrolactone products.

Enhanced performance of rosin-based epoxy composites mixed with carbon nanotubes and cork powders from oriental oak bark

Rosin-based epoxy composites with high-impact toughness, tensile strength, modulus, and excellent flame retardance were prepared through a simple and effective approach. In this study, rosin-based epoxy resin (acrylopimaric diglycidyl ester, APA-ER) was synthesized from rosin, and the chemical structures of the products were determined by H-1 NMR and FT-IR. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and cork powders were introduced to the APA-ER to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy composites. For the first time, cork powder was used to reinforce the modified rosin-based epoxy resin. Testing results of the mechanical properties indicated that the impact toughness of epoxy composite with 1.5 wt% MWCNTs and 3 wt% cork powders (100-200 mesh) had the highest value (12.34 and 12.04 kJ m(-2)), which was increased by 324% and 314%, respectively, compared to pure resin (2.91 kJ m(-2)). The composites with 1.5 wt% MWCNTs displayed better flexural and tensile performance compared to APA-ER/Cork. Moreover, the DMA, TG, and cone calorimeter results showed that APA-ER/Cork had a better performance in thermal stability and flame retardance than APA-ER/MWCNTs. Additionally, the flame retardance of rosin-based epoxy resin was further improved by adding MWCNTs and cork powder simultaneously. These results showed that the rosin-based epoxy resin could be toughened and strengthened effectively, and the thermal performance was improved by MWCNTs and cork powders. In conclusion, the value-added development of rosin and cork products was increased and applied in the field of functional materials.

Hybridorubrins A-D: Azaphilone Heterodimers from Stromata of Hypoxylon fragiforme and Insights into the Biosynthetic Machinery for Azaphilone Diversification

While the hfaza1 BGC likely encodes the assembly of the backbone and addition of fatty acid moieties to yield the (R)-configured series of fragirubrins, the hfaza2 BGC contains the necessary genes to synthesise the widely distributed (S)-mitorubrins. This study is the first example of two distant cross-acting fungal BGCs collaborating to produce two families of azaphilones and bis-azaphilones derived therefrom.

Investigation of Immobilization Effects on Ni(P2N2)(2) Electrocatalysts

A new synthetic route to complexes of the type Ni(P2N2)(2)(2+) with highly functionalized phosphine substituents and the investigation of immobilization effects on these catalysts is reported. Mesoporous TiO2 electrodes were surface modified by attachment of the new phosphonate functionalized Ni(P2N2)(2)2+ complexes, and these provided electrocatalytic materials that proved to be competent and stable for sustained HER in aqueous solution at mild pH and low overpotential. We directly compared the new ligand to a previously reported complex that utilized the amine moiety for surface attachment. Using HER as the benchmark reaction, the P-attached catalyst showed a marginally (9-14%) higher turnover number than its N-attached counterpart.

A novel fluorescent covalent organic framework containing boric acid groups for selective capture and sensing of cis-diol molecules

COF-BA with good stability, a permanent pore structure, a high specific surface area (606 m(2) g(-1)) and a uniform pore size (2.59 nm) exhibited unique selectivity toward the cis-diol guest molecule 1,2-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione (1,2-Doa) with a high adsorption capacity of 177.95 mg g(-1). However, as for the isomers of 1,2-Doa (1,4-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione and 2,6-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione), the corresponding uptake capacities are distinctively decreased to 40.86 mg g(-1) and 3.05 mg g(-1), respectively. It is worth noting that the COF-BA can be recovered and recycled. Moreover, because the formation of the quinoline enhanced the conjugation effect of the COF skeleton, it was unexpectedly found that COF-BA possessed an intrinsic fluorescence property and could be used as an optical sensor for 1,2-Doa.
