As such, relationships between 3-MCPDE and/or GE with frying quality indices – i.e. acidity in term of free fatty acid or acid value); secondary oxidation in term of p-anisidine value, total polar compounds and its fractions, and refractive index – were also discussed when oils were subjected under intermittent and continuous frying conditions.

Re-usable thermally reversible crosslinked adhesives from robust polyester and poly(ester urethane) Diels-Alder networks

The sustainable design of polymers for applications requires careful consideration of how they can be re-used or recycled at the end of service life. There has been considerable interest in covalent adaptable networks (CANs) which offer the potential of the properties of crosslinked polymers but where the materials can be reprocessed like thermoplastics. Although there have been advances in CAN chemistry, materials tend to creep and industrial applications are limited. Here we show thermally reversible crosslinked adhesives from dissociative Diels-Alder networks which can be re-used repeatedly with versatile adhesion and creep resistance. Monomer and isocyanate-free polyester and poly(ester urethane) prepolymers were successfully synthesized by facile techniques with high atom efficiency and the resulting CANs are easy to apply in bulk from the melt. Mechanical properties can be tuned depending on the prepolymer design with the networks providing versatile adhesion to different substrates and creep resistance to 70-80 degrees C, above both the T-g and T-m of the networks. The adhesives are thermally stable during application and can be re-used repeatedly by simple heating/cooling cycles in bulk, without solvents or additional process steps, providing the same level of performance. Our results demonstrate that these Diels-Alder networks are robust in mechanical performance up to the temperature where significant dissociation begins to occur. This opens the possibility for the considered design of prepolymer architecture and reversible chemistry to meet the performance requirements of different applications in a truly sustainable fashion via scalable, efficient, industrially facile methodologies – where materials are free of solvents or monomers in their synthesis, processing, application and re-use.

Light-Embrittled Dental Resin Cements Containing Photodegradable Polyrotaxane Cross-Linkers for Attenuating Debonding Strength

Notwithstanding the progress of dental material adhesion on tooth surfaces in the past several decades, debonding strongly adhered restorative materials from tooth surfaces remains a challenging issue. Herein, we propose the use of photodegradable polyrotaxanes (PRXs), which are supramolecular-interlocked polymers comprising alpha-cyclodextrin threaded along a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) axle, as a component of adhesive resin cements to attenuate debonding strength via light irradiation. We synthesized photodegradable PRXs (iNB-PRXs) using internally o-nitrobenzyl esterintroduced PEG as an axle polymer. Notably, approximately 60% of iNB-PRX degraded into its constituent molecules after 5 min of irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light. Thereafter, iNB-PRX was combined with the clinically utilized adhesive resin cement, and a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA block was adhered on the surface of bovine dentin using an adhesive resin cement cross-linked with iNB-PRX. Although the PMMA block was successfully adhered onto the dentin with a clinically acceptable adhesive force, the tensile strength of the PMMA-dentin specimens decreased significantly upon UV irradiation for 2 min owing to the UV-induced degradation of the iNB-PRX cross-linker. According to these results, the adhesive resin cement containing photodegradable iNB-PRX cross-linkers is a promising candidate for facilitating the debonding of dental materials from tooth surfaces via UV light irradiation.

The oxidation mechanism of phospholipids in Antarctic krill oil promoted by metal ions

Antarctic krill oil (AKO) is an emerging dietary supplement containing metal ions that influence oil oxidation. Thus, this study focuses on the effect and mechanism of metal ions on phospholipid oxidation in AKO. Firstly, AKO containing Mg2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ (200 mu mol/kg) were prepared separately and incubated at 60 degrees C for 6 days. Peroxide value (POV) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content showed that Fe3+ exhibited the most effective prooxidative activity, with the prooxidative activity of Fe-2(SO4)(3) (water-soluble) being stronger than that of ferric oleate (FeOl, fat-soluble). In addition, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) oxidation degree (more than 90%) was considerably greater than phosphatidylcholine (PC) oxidation degree (about 15%) in AKO. Differences in the structure of head group hindered chelation of PC with metal ions than PE due to electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. Therefore, PC significantly inhibited, while PE promoted, the oxidation of polyunsaturated triacylglycerol (TAG), like fish oil (p < 0.01). Effect of replacing the terminal phenyl ring with 3-pyridyl and inversion of imine linkage on the mesophase behaviour of four-ring azo/ester/Schiff base compounds.

In the present work two homologue series of four-ring azo/ester/imine compounds; namely, 4-(4 ‘-alkoxy-phenylazo) phenyl-4 ”-(benzylidene-amino) benzoate, I n, and 4-(4 ‘-alkoxy-phenylazo) phenyl-4 ”-[(pyridin-3-ylmethylene)-amino] benzoate, II n, were prepared and investigated for their mesophase behaviour. In these two types of homologue series, the length of the terminal alkoxy group (n) varies between 6 and 16 carbons. Compounds prepared in both series were structurally characterised via thermogravimetric and elemental analyses, FTIR, H-1-NMR, and mass spectroscopy. Their mesophase transition temperatures were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), whereas, the type of the mesophase was identified by polarised light microscopy (PLM). The molecular structure-property relationship was conducted aiming to investigate the effect of replacing the terminal phenyl group in I n with a pyridyl one in II n, in addition to the effect of variation of the alkoxy chain length. Aiming to investigate the effect of inversion of the methineazo group on the mesophase behaviour of the compounds, a comparison was made between the prepared series of compounds (I n) with previously prepared four rings 4-(4 ‘-alkoxyphenylazo)-phenyl 4 ”-phenyliminomethyl-benzoate phenyl-4MODIFIER LETTER PRIME-(4 ”-alkoxyphenylazo) benzoate, III n. Finally, the mesophases of series II n were compared with their corresponding three-ring analogues, 4-(4 ‘-alkoxy phenyl -4 ”-[(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)-amino] benzoate analogues (IV n).

Two new quinones and six additional metabolites with potential anti-inflammatory activities from the roots of Juglans mandshurica

Two new quinones, 4-(5-hydroxy-1,4-dioxo-1,4-dihydronaphtha-len-3-ylamino)-butyric acid methyl ester (compound 1) and 1,3-dimethoxycarbonyl-8-hydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone (2), and six known compounds (3-8) were isolated from the roots of Juglans mandshurica Maxim., a member of the Juglandaceae family. The chemical structures of the compounds were elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and compared with data from the literature. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the production of nitric oxide, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-6 by the mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line after lipopolysaccharide stimulation in vitro. We found that compounds 1-4 exhibited potent anti-inflammatory effects, as indicated by suppression of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated nitric oxide and cytokine production with 50% inhibitory concentrations between 20.09 mu M and 27.63 mu M. These results identify two novel quinones from J. mandshurica with potential utility as anti-inflammatory compounds.

Identification and similarity analysis of aroma substances in main types of Fenghuang Dancong tea

Fenghuang Dancong tea covers the oolong tea category and is widely acknowledged for its unique floral and honey flavor. In order to characterize the volatile components in nine different aroma types of Fenghuang Dancong tea, the Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC- MS) were employed. In addition, the similarity analysis and cluster analysis (CA) were performed to compare the aroma characteristics and establish the correlation between the nine types of teas. The principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) method were employed to determine the volatile components with a high contribution to the overall aroma of each type of tea. The results presented a total of 122 volatile aroma components including 24 kinds of alcohol, 23 kinds of esters, 15 kinds of olefins, 12 kinds of aldehydes, 12 kinds of ketones, 13 kinds of alkanes and 23 kinds of other components from the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea. Of these volatile aroma components, 22 types were common with linalool, dehydrolinalool, linalool oxide I, linalool oxide II, etc. The similarity of the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea was found between 46.79% and 95.94%. The CA indicated that the nine types of Fenghuang Dancong tea could be clustered into four categories when the ordinate distance reached to 10. The PCA demonstrated that decane, octadecane, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane, dehydrolinalool, geraniol and nerol were the important aroma components to Fenghuang Dancong Tea. OPLS-DA proved that 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane, dehydrolinalool, phenylacetaldehyde, nerolidol, linalool oxide I and hexanal were the key differential compounds between the various types of tea samples. This study provides a theoretical basis for characterizing the volatile aroma components in the main types of Fenghuang Dancong tea as well as the similarity and correlation between various types of Fenghuang Dancong tea.
