O-Allylations and O-benzylations of the α-hydroxy esters (S)-Et lactate and mandelate and di-Me maleate are performed without racemization. After protection by benzylation, (S)-(-)-Et lactate is converted by a sequence of carbonyl reduction, alc. activation, ether formation, and deprotection to the optically active diglycole (S,S)-(+)-Bis(2-hydroxypropyl) ether.
