Azobenzene polymers have photoresponsive property and get very good application in fields of information storage, photonics, mol. switch etc. The azobenzene star polymer with three-arm was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using the trimethyolpropane as initiator, and azobenzene as monomer. The structure of polymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy (FTIR), hydrogen NMR spectrometer (1H-NMR), howing the target product was successfully synthesized. The mol. weight and the mol. weight distribution of the polymer was measured by gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), and the synthesized polymer agreed with the “reactive-controllable” characteristics. The result of UV spectrophotometer absorption of polyazobenzene showed the configuration inversion under light radiation.
