Dehydroamino acids and dehydropeptides were prepared by a one-pot reaction of hydroxy amino acid derivatives employing (EtO)2POCl in the presence of NaH. The reaction is stereospecific and proceeds without racemization. Thus, dehydration of R-Thr-OMe (R = Z, Z-Ala; Z = PhCH2O2C) gave (Z)-RNHC(CO2Me):CHMe in 75-80% yields.
