A Chan-Lam-type C-S coupling reaction using sodium aryl sulfinates RS(O)2Na (R = Ph, naphthalen-2-yl, pyridin-4-yl, pyrimidin-2-yl, etc.) has been developed to provide diaryl thioethers RSR1 (R1 = Ph, furan-2-yl, pyridin-4-yl, 2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl, etc.) in up to 92% yields in the presence of a copper catalyst and potassium sulfite. Both electron-rich and electron-poor sodium aryl sulfinates and diverse organoboron compounds R1X (X = B(OH)2, BF3K, tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl) and tri-Ph boroxin, etc. were tolerated for the synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl thioethers and dithioethers such as 1,4-bis(phenylthio)benzene and 1,3-bis(phenylthio)benzene.
