The stereospecific Pd/Cu-catalyzed oxycarbonylation of syn/anti-hex-5-ene-2,4-diols I and II was used as a key step in the synthesis of bicyclic lactones III and IV. Eventually, the major intermediate III was transformed to the bis-tetrahydrofuran subunit of naturally occurring diterpenoid (-)-neopallavicinin (V). The target compound VI was thus prepared in 7.5% overall yield over eight steps starting from com. available Me (R)-3-hydroxybutanoate.
