The potential of their application as organic photoredox catalysts is showcased in the photomediated contra-thermodynamic E -> Z isomerization of cinnamic acid derivatives and oxidative cyclization of 2-phenyl benzoic acid to benzocoumarin using molecular oxygen as a mild oxidant. Furthermore, unprecedented intermolecular non-covalent n-pi-hole interactions in solid state are discussed based on crystallographic and theoretical data.

The Ginkgo biloba metabolite bilobalide is widely ingested by humans but its effect on the mammalian central nervous system is not fully understood(1-4). Antagonism of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptors (GABA(A)Rs) by bilobalide has been linked to the rescue of cognitive deficits in mouse models of Down syndrome(5). A lack of convulsant activity coupled with neuroprotective effects have led some to postulate an alternative, unidentified target(4); however, steric congestion and the instability of bilobalide(1,2,6) have prevented pull-down of biological targets other than the GABA(A)Rs. A concise and flexible synthesis of bilobalide would facilitate the development of probes for the identification of potential new targets, analogues with differential selectivity between insect and human GABA(A)Rs, and stabilized analogues with an enhanced serum half-life(7). Here we exploit the unusual reactivity of bilobalide to enable a late-stage deep oxidation that symmetrizes the molecular core and enables oxidation states to be embedded in the starting materials. The same overall strategy may be applicable to G. biloba congeners, including the ginkgolides-some of which are glycine-receptor-selective antagonists(8). A chemical synthesis of bilobalide should facilitate the investigation of its biological effects and its therapeutic potential.

Purpose: To investigate by in silico screening the anti-inflammatory constituents of Cinnamomum cassia twigs. Methods: Information on the constituents of C. cassia twigs was retrieved from the online Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) database and literature. Inflammation-related target proteins were identified from DrugBank, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), Therapeutic Target Database (TTD), Genetic Association Database (GAD), and PharmGKB. The identified compounds were filtered by Lipinski’s rules with Discovery Studio software. The Libdock module was used to perform molecular docking; LibdockScores and default cutoff values for hydrogen bonds and van der Weals interactions were recorded. LibdockScores between the prototype ligand and target protein were set as the threshold; compounds with higher LibdockScores than threshold were regarded as active compounds. Cytoscape software was used to construct active constituent-target protein interaction networks. Results: Sixty-nine potential inflammatory constituents with good drug-like properties in C. cassia twigs were screened in silico based on molecular docking and network pharmacology analysis. JAK2, mPEGS-1, COX-2, IL-1 beta, and PPAR gamma were considered the five most important target proteins. Compounds such as methyl dihydromelilotoside, hierochin B, dihydromelilotoside, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol, balanophonin, phenethyl (E)-3-[4-methoxyphenyl]-2-propenoate, quercetin, and luteolin each interacted with more than six of the selected target proteins. Conclusion: C. cassia twigs possess active compounds with good drug-like properties that can potentially be developed to treat inflammation with multi-components on multi-targets.

An oxidative esterification of aldehydes with alkanols catalyzed by an in situ generated low-valent cobalt system has been developed using an enone as a mild oxidant. Mechanistic studies revealed that it proceeds through a Co(i)-catalyzed hydrogen-transfer route, wherein the -vinyl moiety in the bidentate enone functions as a hydride acceptor. Meanwhile, Co(i)-catalyzed formyl C-H activation occurred as a competing reaction leading to aldehyde dimerization. The occurrence of the usually kinetically disfavored hydride transfer step therein was significantly increased in the presence of an enone reacting as a hydride transfer initiator.

Guillermo Calleja and co-workers from @urjc describe URJC-1-MOF as a new heterogeneous recyclable catalyst for c-heteroatom coupling reactions The capacity of copper-based URJC-1-MOF as a MOF catalyst in cross-coupling reactions has been evaluated, focusing on the Chan-Lam-Evans arylation-type reactions on amines and alcohols without extra additives or ligands. The extraordinary chemical and structural stability of URJC-1-MOF and its good specific surface, make this material a promising alternative to homogeneous Cu (II) catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. URJC-1-MOF showed a remarkable catalytic activity for cross-coupling C-N and C-O reactions, higher than other heterogeneous and homogeneous copper-based catalyst, such as CuO, HKUST-1, Cu-MOF-74, Cu(OAc)(2) and CuSO4.5H(2)O. Moreover, its easy recovery by simple filtration and reusability in successive runs without any loss of activity and stability, demonstrates the potential of URJC-1-MOF as an alternative catalyst for this kind of reactions in different chemical media of industrial interest.

A pyridine-based amide functionalized tetracarboxylic acid, 5,5 ‘-(pyridine-2, 6-dicarbonyl)bis(azanediyl)}diisophthalic acid (H4L), was synthesized and its coordination chemistry toward zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions was studied. The reactions of H4L with Zn(NO3)(2).6H(2)O and Cd(NO3)(2).4H(2)O led to its full or partial deprotonation, respectively, and the formation of the 2D coordination polymers [Zn-2(L)(H2O)(4)](n).4n(H2O) (1) and [Cd-3(HL)(2)(DMF)(4)](n).4n(DMF) (2) (DMF = N,N’-dimethylformamide), respectively. They were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, photoluminescence, thermogravimetry, and single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. In 1, the L4- ligand is planar with every carboxylate anion binding a Zn(II) cation and giving rise to a 2D grid with the metals with tetrahedral environments. In 2, the combination of bridging HL3- and dimethylformamide to form trinuclear Cd(II) clusters engenders secondary building block units and generates a layer-type 2D network with the metals with octahedral and pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometries. The topological analyses of 1 and 2 reveal 2,4-connected and 3,6-connected binodal nets, respectively. On account of the presence of Lewis acid (Zn or Cd centers) as well as basic (uncoordinated pyridine and amide groups) sites, 1 and (to a much lower extent) 2 effectively catalyze the one-pot cascade deacetalization-Knoevenagel condensation reactions under quite mild conditions. They act as heterogeneous catalysts, being easy to recover and recycle without losing activity.

For the first time a novel magnetic catalyst was prepared through hybridization of functionalized cyclodextrin nanosponges and octakis(3-chloropropyl)octasilsesquioxane followed by incorporation of Pd and magnetic nanoparticles. The resulting composite, was utilized as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for promoting Sonogashira and Heck reactions in the absence of any ligand and co-catalyst under mild reaction condition. Comparison of the catalytic activities of the control catalysts and the catalyst confirmed that cyclodextrin nanosponges was more efficient support that cyclodextrin. Moreover, the hybrid catalyst showed superior catalytic activity compared to those obtained from the individual components, indicating the contribution of both hybrid components to the catalysis. Furthermore, it was found that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles could improve the catalytic performance. The Study of the recyclability of the catalyst showed high recyclability of the catalyst as well as low Pd leaching. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A visible-light photocatalytic aerobic oxidative lactonization of arene C(sp (2) )-H bonds proceeds in the presence of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and tert -butyl nitrite (TBN). Under the optimized conditions, a range of 2-arylbenzoic acids is converted into the corresponding benzocoumarin derivatives in moderate to excellent yields. This method is characterized by its atom economy, mild reaction conditions, the use of a green oxidant and metal-free catalysis.
