To a solution of 3-bromophenol (3.44 g, 20.0 mmol) and methyl 4-bromobutanoate (4.32 g, 24.0 mmol) in DMF (20 mL) was added K2co3 (5.52 g, 40.0 mmol). The mixture was stirred at rt for 0.5 h and then heated with stirring at 90 oC for 1 h. After diluting with EtOAc (200 mL), the mixture was washed with water (3 x 50 mL), dried and concentrated. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatograph (petroleum/EtOAc = 10:1) to give methyl 4-(3- bromophenoxy)butanoate as a white liquid (5.2 g, yield: 96percent).
