Example 2 Preparation of methyl-3,5-bis(bromomethyl)-benzoate A solution of methyl-3,5-dimethyl-benzoate (16.8 g, 0.10 mol) in carbon tetrachloride (150 ml) was treated with N-bromosuccinimide (35.6 g, 0.20 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (500 mg, cat. amount), and heated to reflux.
