A mixture of dimethyl bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-l ,4-dicarboxylate (1.0 g, 4.71 mmol) and lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.593 g, 14.13 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) and water (40 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 days. Volatiles were removed under vacuum, and the residue was acidified with 1 N HC1 solution. The white suspension was then extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL).
