To a solution of methyl 2,2-dimethoxyacetate (8.7 g, 64.9 mmol, 7.98 mL, 1 eq) in dioxane (50 mL) and H20 (50 mL) was added LiOH H20 (3.27 g, 77.8 mmol, 1.2 eq) at 0 C . The combined organic layers were dried over Na2S04, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 3.54 g of a colorless oil, which was used directly in the next step.
